There's Waldo! Finding the elusive traveller using AI - Raspberry Pi
Let me start by stating that here in the UK, we call Waldo Wally. And as I'm writing this post at my desk at Pi Towers, Cambridge, I have taken the decision to refer to the red and white-clad fellow as Wally moving forward. There's Waldo is a robot built to find Waldo and point at him. The robot arm is controlled by a Raspberry Pi using the PYARM Python library for the UARM Metal. Once initialized the arm is instructed to extend and take a photo of the canvas below.
Why Brexit Is Not Like Y2K In Driving Technology Change
This article was written in collaboration with Deloitte. While chatting with some non-technology colleagues recently, I learned many believe Brexit may drive a level of technology change within organizations comparable to the Y2K bug in the late 1990s. The high level of technology replacement for Y2K (or the Millennium Bug, as it was also called) was driven by the risk that many systems would simply quit operating at midnight on 1 January 2000. There was a significant degree of nervousness, grounded partially in commercial reality but short of some of the wilder predictions, like that planes might fall out of the sky. Organizations had to make significant preparations for the "worst case scenario" to protect themselves from the most disruptive potential outcomes.

Following on from a report that identified artificial intelligence (AI) as crucial in overcoming challenges in the legal industry, Information Age wanted to delve deeper into the subject. As a result, we got in touch Geoffrey Vance, the chair of Perkins Coie's E-Discovery Services and Strategy Practice, and Alvin Lindsay, partner at Hogan Lovells. Vance took over the Perkins Coie practice 3 years ago after leading McDermott Will & Emery's e-discovery group for 7 years, and has led Perkins Coie to be one of the first to use AI for various discovery, litigation and other legal needs. He's seen associates get more involved in this kind of work right at the start of their careers, and spoke to Information Age about the evolution of their roles with the rise of AI. At the same time, Lindsay has written about potential of AI in the legal industry and is well placed to comment on this encroaching trend.
Thousands Of Scientists Sign Pledge Against Developing Lethal A.I.
Thousands of leading scientists have urged their colleagues against helping governments create killer robots, making the movie The Terminator a reality. In other words, killer robots, that could eventually develop a mind of their own and take over the world. Scientists have vowed they will not support robots "that can identify and attack people without human oversight." Two leading experts backing the commitment, Demis Hassabis at Google DeepMind and Elon Musk at SpaceX, are among the more than 2,400 signatories whom have pledged to deter military firms and nations from building lethal autonomous weapon systems, referred to as Laws. The move is the latest from concerned scientists and organizations about giving a machine the power to choose someone's fate of life or death.
High-tech Tokyo tops list of world's most innovative cities
LONDON – Tokyo has topped a list of the world's most innovative cities, leapfrogging London and New York after embracing the "globe-shaking trends of robotics and 3-D manufacturing." The Japanese capital has risen rapidly since entering the top 10 of the Innovation Cities Index three years ago behind Paris, and was one of three Asian cities to feature this year. "What really surprised us this year was the resurgence of Tokyo, moving up to eclipse rival cities like Boston," said Christopher Hire, director of commercial data provider 2thinknow, which published the annual ranking on Friday. "They showed clear direction by embracing smart technology change to lead innovation and leadership in what we have identified as the twin long-term globe-shaking trends of robotics and 3-D manufacturing." Singapore, Sydney and Seoul also ranked highly in the index, which judges cities on 162 indicators including web censorship, wealth distribution and the potential for green businesses.
