DeepMind has successfully developed a system that can analyze retinal scans and spot symptoms of sight-threatening eye diseases. Today, the AI division -- owned by Google's parent company Alphabet -- published "early results" of a research project with the UK's Moorfields Eye Hospital. They show that the company's algorithms can quickly examine optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and make diagnoses with the same accuracy as human clinicians. In addition, the system can show its workings, allowing eye care professionals to scrutinize the final assessment. At the moment, hospitals and clinics use flesh-and-bone specialists to dissect OCT scans.

Mexican banks – already keen on digital solutions to optimize their processes and drive customer loyalty – are quickly seeing the benefits of artificial intelligence. Together with Brazil and the UK, Mexico is one of the countries where banks show most enthusiasm for using AI, according to a study published in June by GFT, an IT consultancy, which surveyed banks in eight countries. While the outcome for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has significantly improved over the last 30 years due to effective treatment options, the number of patients with CLL dying as a result of infection has not particularly decreased; indicating an unmet need in new patients with immune dysfunction. Here, Carsten Niemann, MD, PhD, of Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark, points to the statistic that over 25% of patients with CLL will have a severe infection, and how the use of a machine learning algorithm developed in collaboration with the Danish Technical University may help prevent infection-related deaths in patients with CLL. From the 23rd Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) 2018, held in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr Niemann explains how this process can help identify those patients with greater than 70% risk of infection, who can then receive either pre-emptive treatment or observation in a new clinical trial currently being designed.

Digital transformation has been the recent focal point in the discussion surrounding healthcare, and with AI at the forefront, continuously popping up as an example of ways the NHS could achieve its aims stated in the Five Year Forward View. The tech focused Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, announced an investment of £400 million in tech transformation and supported AI as providing "huge opportunities to improve patient outcomes and to make life easier for staff." The Prime Minister herself has even spoken at length about AIs potential improve health provision in the UK. However, AI not only provides opportunities to the NHS, it is also draws our attention to the areas where the NHS needs improving. The House of Lords Select Committee report'AI in the UK: Ready, willing and able?' showed that obtaining applicable data from other organisations remains the most significant barrier to adoption of AI and could force the implantation to stand still whilst other changes are made. This leave us with one question, what does the NHS workforce think?

Everyone loves posting a good vacation photo to Instagram--but what if each one could have its own unique soundtrack, too? Royal Caribbean is experimenting with that possibility, on Tuesday launching an online tool that turns user images into kaleidoscopic mini-videos, complete with original music inspired by the visuals -- and assembled by artificial intelligence (AI). A picture from a botanical garden, of red flowers and green leaves, generates two bars of smooth jazz. In a quick snap of the Bensonhurst Statue House, the cruise line's technology recognizes a dour likeness of a face peeking over a fence, and delivers a funky nu-disco snippet, with pumping guitars and horn swells. Titled SoundSeeker, the marketer's new website chops and swirls the three photos into one spinning abstract visual sequence -- weaving in ample shots of crystal blue waters -- and strings together the music, for a total of six bars at about 100 beats per minute.
