In LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media, Singer and co-author Emerson Brooking fit phenomena like these into a broader narrative about the fast-evolving nexus of propaganda, digital marketing and psychological warfare. In their conception of weaponized social media, everyone from brand marketers and reality stars to terrorist recruiters and military personnel are now competing with one another in a viral attention battleground where troll armies, misinformation and bot networks are weapons of choice. Singer spoke with Adweek about how this social media atmosphere evolved, why brands need to pay attention to Russian bots and how artificial intelligence personas could be the future of online propaganda.

A contemporary artist has (almost) succeeded in bringing Queen Elizabeth I back to life. In a new exhibit titled'The Mask of Youth', English artist Mat Collishaw has created a strikingly realistic recreation of the Tudor Queen's head with eyes that follow you around the room, blink expectantly and a mouth that opens periodically. The exhibit takes on a surrealist feeling as the animatronic head sits suspended in a mirrored recess, facing the Armada Portrait, one of the most famous paintings of Queen Elizabeth I. In a new exhibit titled'The Mask of Youth', English artist Mat Collishaw has created a strikingly realistic recreation of the Tudor Queen's head with eyes that follow you around the room, blink expectantly and a mouth that opens periodically'The Mask of Youth' is now on view at the Queen's House, Greenwich and was commissioned by Royal Museums Greenwich. When viewers stand in front of the suspended head, they immediately see things from her point of view, reflected in the mirror behind her.


How autonomous cars pose a threat to airlines

Car companies have always given their designers and engineers a great degree of freedom to dream when they aren't working directly on a new production model. Since its major revival under Chinese owner Zhejiang Geely Holding, Volvo's design and engineering teams have had little time to dream. The end result is a vision of marrying advances in autonomous driving and motoring to offer an alternative to short-haul flights. True, it has always been the case that taking the car has been an option for European and US travellers, but not in the way conceived by Volvo's 360c. At the unveiling of the vehicle at the headquarters of Volvo Cars in Gothenburg, senior management explained that the auto industry is still unsure where autonomous driving is heading, but the conversation needed to start.

This robotic finger attachment for your smartphone will gently caress your hand

Our smartphones are cold, passive devices that usually can't move autonomously unless they're falling onto our faces while we're looking at them in bed. A research team in France is exploring ways to change that by giving our smartphones the ability to interact with us more (via New Scientist). MobiLimb is a robotic finger attachment that plugs in through a smartphone's Micro USB port, moves using five servo motors, and is powered by an Arduino microcontroller. It can tap the user's hand in response to phone notifications, be used as a joystick controller, or, with the addition of a little fuzzy sheath accessory, it can turn into a cat tail. MobiLimb is a research project by PhD student Marc Teyssier and his team across from French universities.


University and robotics firm to collaborate on North Sea AI underwater vehicles

Autonomous Robotics, a subsidiary of listed company Thalassa, is to collaborate with Robert Gordon University to conduct research on swarm technology of autonomous underwater vehicles in the North Sea. The work is supported by the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre. The purpose of this research is to further enhance the capability of the'flying node' system and further reduce the cost and time for ocean bottom seismic surveys. The Swarm Technology research will be performed by Dr Wai-keung Fung and Mr Adham Sabra, who are with the Communications and Autonomous Systems Group within the School of Engineering, with results are expected within 12 months. Chairman Dave Grant said: "ARL are working with RGU to research and create a practical localisation system for the flying node system which will allow the flying nodes to operate in a swarm and move from their initial seabed position to a new seabed location.


Horrifying finger attachment lets your phone touch you back

Have you ever wished your phone could tap you when you had a notification, drag itself over to you on its own or touch you back? Researchers in France have developed a finger-like phone and tablet attachment that can do all of those things and more. Called MobiLimb, it's made up of five servo motors, an Arduino microcontroller and a sensor, and it can do a number of unsettling things that are straight out of nightmares. "In the spirit of human augmentation, which aims at overcoming human body limitations by using robotic devices, our approach aims at overcoming mobile device limitations (static, passive, motionless) by using a robotic limb," Marc Teyssier, one of the researchers behind MobiLimb, writes on his website. And to be fair, MobiLimb actually has some rather useful capabilities.
