Toyota unveils Kirobo Mini, a robot baby intended to make lonely people more happy

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Toyota to Sell 'Cuddly Companion' Robot in Japan

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

TOKYO-- Toyota TM 0.06 % Motor Corp. plans to sell a pint-size robot in Japan called Kirobo Mini that is designed to provide companionship to people. The robot goes on sale for 39,800 yen ( 392) this winter in Toyota dealerships in Tokyo and the area around the company's headquarters in Nagoya. Kirobo, a combination of the Japanese word for hope and robot, can hold basic conversations while blinking its oversize eyes and wagging its limbs. It also comes with a cradle that fits in a car's cupholder, "helping it fulfill its role as a cuddly companion always on hand for heart-touching communication," the company said. Japan has long had a love affair with robots.

Toyota pitches tiny talking robot as companion for lonely people

The Japan Times

A new robot for lonely people made by Toyota Motor Corp. can do little other than chatter in a high-pitched voice. The 39,800, 10-cm-tall, doll-like Kirobo Mini -- whose name comes from kibo (hope) and robot -- supposedly has the smarts of a 5-year-old. Its value, according to general manager in charge of the project Fuminori Kataoka, is chiefly emotional. It comes equipped with a camera, microphone and Bluetooth, and connects to smartphones installed with a certain app. Ideally, it will turn its head toward the speaker, though that function sometimes fails because its voice recognition ability is far from perfect.

This Android App Can Help You Text Without Typing

TIME - Tech

Five years of owning smartphones has conditioned my thumbs to navigate tiny virtual keyboards with speed and precision. I imagine many feel the same way, given smartphone owners worldwide are spending between 50 and 200 minutes every week using messaging apps. Yet an increasing number of voice dictation apps are making it easier than ever to communicate not with our thumbs, but with our voices. The latest example of such an app is TalkType, an Android keyboard created by Baidu Research and launching Monday. What separates TalkType from the myriad other smartphone keyboards out there is that its users aren't greeted with a QWERTY typing pad, but rather a round microphone icon.

"Robo advisors" are a hot topic in the financial advisory business these days. These software applications use advanced analytics to provide investors with "objective" advice that is based purely on data and trends. What's more, they can be programmed to automatically allocate, deploy and rebalance investments. Robo advisors are a form of artificial intelligence and, thus, have numerous advantages over human advisors. For one thing, they always give the same advice regardless of which customer they are dealing with โ€“ so there is a consistency factor that is attractive from a consumer and regulatory standpoint.

Tech titans join to study artificial intelligence โ€น Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

Major technology firms have joined forces in a partnership on artificial intelligence, aiming to cooperate on "best practices" on using the technology "to benefit people and society." Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM, and Google-owned British AI firm DeepMind have announced a non-profit organization called "Partnership on AI" focused on helping the public understand the technology and practices in the field. The move comes amid concerns that new artificial intelligence efforts could spin out of control and end up being detrimental to society. The companies "will conduct research, recommend best practices, and publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness, and inclusivity; transparency, privacy, and interoperability; collaboration between people and AI systems; and the trustworthiness, reliability, and robustness of the technology," according to a statement. Academics, non-profit groups, and specialists in policy and ethics will be invited to join the board of the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society (Partnership on AI).

Tesla sees jump in car deliveries

BBC News

US electric carmaker Tesla, which has yet to make a profit, has reported a sharp rise in car deliveries for the past quarter. The firm said it shipped 24,500 cars in the third quarter, up 70% on the second quarter and more than double the number delivered in the same period in 2015. It also confirmed its 50,000 production target for the second half of 2016. The announcement comes amid criticism of the firm after its autopilot system was linked to several accidents. The autopilot feature makes the vehicles automatically change lanes and react to traffic, but it is not a fully-fledged self-driving technology.

Apple Plans To Acquire Another Machine Learning Startup, And It's India-Based

#artificialintelligence

Looking at Apple's latest shopping list, there no denying the fact that Tim Cook has big plans for the artificial intelligence industry. What seems like a shopping spree, only months after buying Turi, and also recollecting that Apple bought Perceptio at the end of 2015, rumors of the firm buying another machine learning startup have resurfaced. This time it's India/US based machine learning startup called Tuplejump. Though the representative from Apple neither denied nor acknowledged the buzz going around, but they didn't either shy away from giving their standard response when they do acquire a company: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." The Hyderabad-based firm helps companies to store, process and visualise big data.
