Bengaluru-based multi-speciality hospital chain Narayana Hrudyalaya (NH), which announced its IPO at the start of 2016, has 54 facilities all across India. At its different hospitals, Narayana carries out 650 to 700 cardiac surgeries each month. Speaking at the sidelines of a conference organised by Microsoft India last month, Kumar KV, Vice President at NH chatted with Gadgets 360 about how technology was changing the field of medicine, with immediate developments in fields such as 3D printing, along with long term projects such as the use of deep learning to improve the predictive capabilities of hospitals. At the same conference, Sriram Rajamani, Managing Director at Microsoft Research, India, explained that we are now beyond the point of just talking about machine learning, as gradual improvements in algorithms, and gradual increases in computing power, along with distributed and data processing via the cloud are making it possible for machines to have a quantifiable impact in the field of medicine. For example, Microsoft Research is currently running a project called 99Dots to improve medication adherence for tuberculosis patients.

The world's first laundry sorting and folding robot will go on sale in 2017, its manufacturer said on Tuesday at the Ceatec electronics show just outside of Tokyo. Laundroid is the size of a large refrigerator and has a pull-out drawer near its base where unsorted clothes can be thrown in. A robot inside the device picks up each item of clothing and uses image analysis with artificial intelligence to figure out what kind of clothing it is so it knows the correct way to fold it. For humans, identifying and folding laundry is an easy albeit mundane task, but for a machine it's very difficult. That's reflected in the size of the device and its speed. During a demonstration on Tuesday it took about 10 minutes to pick out one garment, identify it and fold it.

Cabinet minister Hiroshige Seko said the government will host a World Robot Summit in 2020 with the aim of promoting competition in speed, accuracy and quality of robot performance in the manufacturing and service sectors. The international convention is expected to offer the robot industry an opportunity to accelerate research and development. "We would like to gather robots using cutting edge technology and ideas from across the world," Seko, head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, said Tuesday. Last year, the government drew up a strategy to utilize robot technology in fields such as nursing care, medical treatment and agriculture and fisheries in the face of the aging population and infrastructure issues. METI as started soliciting candidate municipalities to host the event.
