How you see the world may be very different than how someone else sees it. And recognizing that has long been thought to be a uniquely human ability. But when it comes to understanding others' perspectives, humans might not be alone. "Reading others' minds is not our special skill," says Fumihiro Kano, a comparative psychologist at Kyoto University in Japan. Nonhuman apes can do it, too, according to Dr. Kano's research, published Thursday in the journal Science, a finding that could further blur the line between the cognitive capacities of humans and nonhuman apes.

That's the premise of Nugit, a Singapore-based startup focused on marketing that raised 5.2 million in fresh funding from Sequoia Capital's India fund this week. Nugit landed undisclosed seed funding from 500 Startups and The Hub Singapore last year. Founded by Australia-born marketing executive David Sanderson, Nugit sits between its customers and their data platforms -- it supports 15 right now, including Facebook Ad Manager, Google AdWords and DoubleClick -- to help make sense of realms of information. The idea is to make a digital marketer's job easier by cutting down on noise and producing "decision-ready reports," such as PowerPoint presentations, graphics and other visualizations. The company started out automating many of the processes that marketers are faced with when dealing with data, such as cleaning information and aligning it, until Sanderson -- formerly of GroupM and other ad agencies -- realized that computers could go beyond that and deliver insight that is difficult or seriously time-consuming for humans.

Omron's table tennis robot is getting smarter. At this week's Ceatec electronics show in Japan, the company has unveiled a new version that uses machine learning to assess the strength of an opponent and ramp up its game accordingly. The robot, named Forpheus, was first shown at the event in 2014 to impressive reviews. A series of robotic arms manipulate a table tennis bat, guided by cameras that watch the ball and predict where it's going to land. Omron developed the robot to promote the company's sensor technology and this latest version is showing off some of what can be done when sensing combines with machine learning and artificial intelligence.

A Japanese company has developed an electrical cable that can be stretched. Asahi Kasei says the cable, called Roboden, will expand by up to 40 percent of its length before hitting its limit. It was originally developed for use in robotics, where cables sometimes need to snake around joints that pivot or extend. Typically, spare cable has to be built into the wiring to accommodate this movement, and that can get snagged. Roboden can closely follow the robot's body and stretch as needed.
