Dwarf planet Ceres is rich with ice and once might have supported life, scientists say
A dwarf planet in our own solar system might once have supported life, scientists have said. Ceres, a mysterious rocky planet in the asteroid belt between Mars ad Jupiter, has a rich body of ice beneath its dark surface, according to scientists. The discoveries were reported in a pair of studies published in the journals Science and Nature Astronomy. The scientists behind them hope that they could help commercial endeavours to mine water and other resources from asteroids, and to send humans out beyond the moon. My day job, in lieu of teaching creative writing like a normal person, is writing scripts for blockbuster video games. Last summer, while I watched a play-through of the then-unreleased Gears of War 4, for which I was the lead writer, something odd happened. The game's story called for a massive plane crash, out of which a single robot, operatically aflame, was intended to stride toward the player. Within the game's fiction, robots have hitherto opposed the player, but we wanted this particular burning robot to pose no immediate threat. The game programmers had thus switched off the hostility driven by the robot's artificial intelligence, allowing the player to walk past the hapless robot or shoot it. Most of us on the development team, I think, hoped our game's future players wouldn't shoot. Just ahead of the encounter we placed what is referred to, in game design, as a frontgate--a kind of contrived environmental blockage intended to prevent players from rushing too far ahead, which can mess up loading times.
Can we predict flu deaths with Machine Learning and R?
Among the many R packages, there is the outbreaks package. It contains datasets on epidemics, on of which is from the 2013 outbreak of influenza A H7N9 in China, as analysed by Kucharski et al. (2014): I will be using their data as an example to test whether we can use Machine Learning algorithms for predicting disease outcome. To do so, I selected and extracted features from the raw data, including age, days between onset and outcome, gender, whether the patients were hospitalised, etc. Missing values were imputed and different model algorithms were used to predict outcome (death or recovery). The thus prepared dataset was devided into training and testing subsets. The test subset contained all cases with an unknown outcome. Before I applied the models to the test data, I further split the training data into validation subsets.
Smart machines to enter mainstream adoption by 2021: Gartner - ET Telecom
Mumbai: Smart machines, including cognitive computing, artificial intelligence, intelligent automation, machine learning and deep learning, will enter mainstream adoption by 2021, with 30% adoption by large companies, a Gartner report said on Friday. The report suggests that this represents opportunities to help enterprises assess, select, implement, change and adapt talent, and for IT and business processes for business benefits. "Smart machines will profoundly change the way work is done and how value is created. From dynamic pricing models and fraud detection, to predictive policing and robotics, smart machines have broad applicability in all industries," said Susan Tan, research vice president at Gartner, in a statement. The report added that the opportunity for consulting and system integration (C&SI) services will range from advising enterprises to help them sort through the hype to helping with strategic design, training of the smart machines, deployment and integration to expansion and ongoing refinement.

Turning Big Data Into Manageable Data
Big data is ubiquitous because it can provide valuable insight that is unavailable without it. Analyzing big data sets can pose problems, however. For starters, big data is big, sometimes too big to be handled effectively by commonly used analysis tools. Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the University of Haifa in Israel have developed a solution to this problem that turns big data into manageable data. Data analysis tools such as low-rank approximation, singular-value decomposition, principal-component analysis, and nonnegative matrix factorization are commonly used to reduce the number of variables in a dataset.

Super Mario Run: Nintendo shares plunge amid bad reviews, reducing company's value by $2 billion
Nintendo has launched Super Mario Run, its first game for iOS, and found itself worth $2 billion less than when it started. The game received huge amounts of hype for its combination of nostalgia and excitement, and as a signal that Nintendo might look to move more of its games off its less popular consoles. But it has already been hit by some backlash, over its high price and a mode that means it will only work if players have an internet connection. Those concerns appear to have dragged down Nintendo's share price, which fell by about 5 per cent in the wake of the release. That meant that the value of the company dropped by around $2 billion.
