It wasn't that long ago when the first smartphone came out, and we saw the pace of connected devices and associated mobile applications accelerate beyond what anyone could have imagined. Shortly after that, something incredible happened, we reached the point where there were more connected devices than people on the planet. Since then, we've used this to measure the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). Research predicts there will be as many as 50 to 100, and possibly even 200 billion connected devices by 2020. Some businesses are already set up for IoT, like operators of large networks of devices such as self-service kiosks and vending machines.

Japanese firms drawing profitable clues from Paralympians

More and more Japanese companies are seeing benefits from helping Paralympians and their support organizations ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. In mid-October, Yui Kamiji, bronze medalist in women's wheelchair tennis at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, was invited to a meeting with 11 employees at Japan Airlines, an official sponsor of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. The group has been nicknamed the JAL Sports Ambassadors. Kamiji, who belongs to record label Avex Group Holdings Inc., recalled her experience at the Rio Games and how she dealt with the long flight. Asked what wheelchair athletes care most about during long flights, Kamiji said some carry cushions with them, depending on their disability, to avoid developing bedsores.


Breakthrough for deep learning with Intel FPGAs

Intel and Chinese telecoms company ZTE claim to have achieved a new record – more than 1000 images per second in facial recognition – with what is known as'theoretical high accuracy' achieved for their custom topology. "Perception, such as recognising a face in an image, is one of the essential goals of the ZTE 5G system," said Duan Xiangyang, vice president of the ZTE Wireless Institute. "Deep learning technology is important as it can enable such perception in mobile edge computing systems, thus making ZTE's 5G system smarter." The test took place in Nanjing, where ZTE's engineers used Intel's Arria 10 FPGA for a cloud inferencing application using a convolutional neural networks (CNN) algorithm. According to the company, the deep learning designs can be migrated from the Arria 10 FPGA family to the Intel Stratix 10 FPGA family, and users can expect up to nine times performance boost.

In 1971, Intel, then an obscure firm in what would only later come to be known as Silicon Valley, released a chip called the 4004. It was the world's first commercially available microprocessor, which meant it sported all the electronic circuits necessary for advanced number-crunching in a single, tiny package. It was a marvel of its time, built from 2,300 tiny transistors, each around 10,000 nanometres (or billionths of a metre) across – about the size of a red blood cell. A transistor is an electronic switch that, by flipping between "on" and "off", provides a physical representation of the 1s and 0s that are the fundamental particles of information. In 2015 Intel, by then the world's leading chipmaker, with revenues of more than $55bn that year, released its Skylake chips. The firm no longer publishes exact numbers, but the best guess is that they have about 1.5bn–2 bn transistors apiece. Spaced 14 nanometres apart, each is so tiny as to be literally invisible, for they are more than an order of magnitude smaller than the wavelengths of light that humans use to see.


Apple Set to Join Amazon, Google, Facebook in AI Research Group

Apple Inc. is set to join the Partnership on AI, an artificial intelligence research group that includes Amazon.com Apple's admission into the group could be announced as soon as this week, according to people familiar with the situation. Representatives at Apple and the Partnership on AI declined to comment. When the nonprofit organization was announced in September, it anticipated gaining additional members. Apple, Twitter Inc., Intel Corp. and China's Baidu Inc. were among noticeable absentees at the time.

Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a large-scale, aggregate view. One architecture useful for capturing and analyzing streaming data is the Lambda Architecture, representing a model of how to analyze real-time and historical data together. In his session at Big Data Expo, Dale Kim, Director of Industry Solutions at MapR, covered the practice of capturing canonical data "as it lands" as a baseline for accommodating future analytics requirements. Is AI Sexist?

It started as a seemingly sweet Twitter chatbot. Modeled after a millennial, it awakened on the internet from behind a pixelated image of a full-lipped young female with a wide and staring gaze. Microsoft, the multinational technology company that created the bot, named it Tay, assigned it a gender, and gave "her" account a tagline that promised, "The more you talk the smarter Tay gets!" She brimmed with enthusiasm: "can i just say that im stoked to meet u? humans are super cool." She asked innocent questions: "Why isn't #NationalPuppyDay everyday?" Tay's designers built her to be a creature of the web, reliant on artificial intelligence (AI) to learn and engage in human conversations and get better at it by interacting with people over social media. As the day went on, Tay gained followers. She also quickly fell prey to Twitter users targeting her vulnerabilities. For those internet antagonists looking to manipulate Tay, it didn't take much effort; they engaged the bot in ugly conversations, tricking the technology into mimicking their racist and sexist behavior.
