A small tweak for Blizzard's World of Warcraft is causing big effects for subscribers and the massively multiplayer online game's economy. Blizzard highlighted the in-game update in a video released Monday. As part of the tweak, WoW Tokens -- an item that can be purchased with actual money or in-game gold -- can now be used to add money to a user's Battle.net Previously, WoW Tokens could be redeemed to add an additional 30 days on a user's subscription time or sold for gold on the game's auction market. While the tweak has only been in effect for one day, it's caused massive global spikes and fluctuations in gold prices for World of Warcraft subscribers.

Last August, NASA opened the first round of the Space Robotics Challenge. A follow-on to the DARPA Robotics Challenge, the SRC is focused on what it's going to take to get humans back to the moon or on to Mars, embracing the idea that sending humanoid robots there first would make everything a heck of a lot easier. Just like the DRC, the SRC starts in simulation, with an initial round to select 20 finalists from 93 competing teams. NASA has just announced the results. In order to make it into one of the 20 finalist slots, teams had to perform some simple tasks in simulation (using Gazebo) as quickly as possible.

Starbucks is putting its own spin on the virtual assistant. The popular coffee franchise has rolled out a Siri-like assistant app for mobile that lets you skip baristas and place orders by chatting or speaking directly to your phone. The feature essentially works as an extension of the Mobile and Pay functionality Starbucks launched back in 2015, which allowed customers to avoid annoying queues by ordering in advance online. Chorus.ai, a startup that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to analyze sales calls, announced today that it has raised $16 million. The round was led by Redpoint Ventures. The San Francisco- and Tel Aviv-based startup provides a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering that uses in-house developed speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and AI to transcribe, analyze, and deliver real-time feedback on sales conversations. The aim is to improve sales rep performance and help companies understand why some deals don't close. "Studies show that win rates increase by 33 percent with a proper coaching program in place, yet most managers don't have the time to sit in on calls, and no one has the capacity to learn from the thousands of meetings that take place each quarter," said Roy Raanani, CEO and cofounder of Chorus.ai, in a statement.

Apple is going to start making the iPhone 8 far sooner than expected, according to reports. The move could indicate that the Apple plans to release the new phone earlier than normal, that it is expecting to sell a lot more of them or that it is intending to add so many changes that the phones will take far longer to produce. There is "some indication" that Apple is ramping up production of the new phone, according to analysts from BlueFin Research Partners. New details about Bixby, the Samsung Galaxy S8's AI assistant, have emerged ahead of the phone's unveiling next month. The virtual helper will support up to eight languages at launch, including English, Korean and Chinese, according to SamMobile. Yemen has halted the United States from conducting Special Operations ground missions against suspected terrorist groups in the country. Senior officials told the New York Times, that the Yemeni ban does not include military drone attacks and also does not affect the American military advisers that are aiding Yemenis and forces from the United Arab Emirates. Besides the loss of a helicopter worth $75 million and the death of several civilians including children, the loss from the "botched" raid, which the White House has repeatedly characterized as a success, also included a member of the Navy's SEAL Team 6, Chief Petty Officer William Owens. Among those killed in the raid conducted on Jan. 29, also includes the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, the Yemeni-American al-Qaida leader who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011. Despite the warnings of several top ex-senior officials including a former CIA and NSA director, who had said that Trump's travel ban could endanger troops and hurt national security, it is still unknown at the time if the Yemeni ban is a form of retribution towards the Trump executive order that disallowed refugees from seven predominantly Muslim countries including–Yemen (before being temporarily revoked).
