Recent American news events range from horrifying to dystopian, but reading the applications of our fast.ai I was blown away by how many bright, creative, resourceful folks from all over the world are applying deep learning to tackle a variety of meaningful and interesting problems. Their passions range from ending illegal logging, diagnosing malaria in rural Uganda, translating Japanese manga, reducing farmer suicides in India via better loans, making Nigerian fashion recommendations, monitoring patients with Parkinson's disease, and more. Our mission at fast.ai is to make deep learning accessible to people from varied backgrounds outside of elite institutions, who are tackling problems in meaningful but low-resource areas, far from mainstream deep learning research. Our group of selected fellows for Deep Learning Part 2 includes people from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Singapore, Israel, Canada, Spain, Germany, France, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.

Phone companies will soon start giving people free, unlimited internet to watch films and TV, according to Netflix's boss. CEO Reed Hastings suggested that networks will soon allow their customers access to two different streams for watching videos. They will be able to to watch as much Netflix as they want but have a relatively slow speed, he suggested, while they will also keep their unlimited allowance for other uses for the internet. Microsoft is launching the Netflix of games, letting people play as many as they want for just $10 a month. The Xbox Games Pass will be a monthly subscription service that gives access to 100 games, Microsoft has said. As such, it works like Netflix or similar to the PlayStation Now service that Sony has offered for years. But unlike Sony's option, where people are required to stream the games over the internet, Microsoft will let people actually download the titles to their own console. Microsoft's will also have fewer titles, with only 100 at launch compared with PlayStation Now's 450 – but all of Sony's games are for the PS3, and there's been no indication that it will bring the latest games to the service.

While some pundits predicted that we were years away from a computer that could beat a human expert at "Go", this achievement was recently announced. If a "deep learning" program can now beat a game that has more possible moves than atoms in the known universe, then what's stopping us from unleashing it upon the stock market and making millions? The idea of using computers to trade stocks is hardly new.

Zoho today unveiled Zia, the new Zoho CRM intelligent sales assistant, powered by AI, that detects anomalies, suggests workflows and macros, and advises salespeople the best time to contact a prospect. Zoho also launched Blueprint, a Zoho CRM tool for building and implementing business processes. Honda opened its new Innovation Lab Tokyo to press for the first time on Tuesday, and also marked the occasion by announcing the debut of a new tech R&D group within the facility called R&D Center X. The new unit will begin operations in April, and will focus on the kind of cutting edge stuff you might imagine it would – robotics, mobility services and systems, artificial intelligence and energy tech including batteries. But it's not just a pie-in-the-sky research lab; Honda's focus with R&D Center X will be on delivering results that can be used in market, and the company told Automotive News we could see results from the new group's efforts as early as next year in robotics, and by 2020 for a novel development in the field of autonomous driving. R&D Center X sounds like it will also lean heavily on Honda's Xcelerator program, since it's going to be looking to collaborate with outside companies where it makes sense. The Xcelerator program, Honda's own support and scouting program for startups, will likely prove a worthwhile pipeline for finding some of those external partners. Honda is also basing Center X in Tokyo, not Silicon Valley, by design – Japan's engineering schools provide a wealth of top-flight talent, the company says, while it can still tap into SV via work with external sources.

The new iPhone is going to change its charging point again, making most accessories defunct in one swift move. Apple will drop the Lightning Port that's currently used to put charge into the phone and get data out of it, and instead use USB-C, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. USB-C is quickly becoming the standard for the bottom of phones, and is used in rivals including Google's Pixel and even in Apple's own laptops. But the change would come just a few years after the Lightning Port was introduced with the iPhone 5.
