The new Scarlett Johansson movie, "Ghost in the Shell," is upon us, sheathed in controversy. Rupert Sanders's film is adapted from the anime work of the same name, directed by Mamoru Oshii, in 1995. Fans of anime are ferociously purist and loyal, and for them, I suspect, the very notion of converting Oshii's masterpiece (as it is deemed to be) into a live-action Hollywood remake smells of both travesty and sellout. Such scorn is as nothing, however, compared with the wrath that has greeted the casting of Johansson. In the original, which started life as a graphic novel, her character was called Major Kusanagi, but in Sanders's movie she is referred to mostly as Major.


Adversarial Connective-exploiting Networks for Implicit Discourse Relation Classification

Implicit discourse relation classification is of great challenge due to the lack of connectives as strong linguistic cues, which motivates the use of annotated implicit connectives to improve the recognition. We propose a feature imitation framework in which an implicit relation network is driven to learn from another neural network with access to connectives, and thus encouraged to extract similarly salient features for accurate classification. We develop an adversarial model to enable an adaptive imitation scheme through competition between the implicit network and a rival feature discriminator. Our method effectively transfers discriminability of connectives to the implicit features, and achieves state-of-the-art performance on the PDTB benchmark.

Back in 1995, the NavLab 5 team at Carnegie Mellon University launched an autonomous vehicle on a trip from Pittsburgh to San Diego. It averaged speeds above 60 mph. So if self-driving technology worked on a cross-country trip 22 years ago, why aren't roads filled with autonomous cars today? The reason is the technology remains closer to the research lab stage and is not ready for prime time, ay experts. Sensors must shrink, improve their range, particularly in bad weather, and become less expensive.


Banks are banking on AI to get to know their human customers better

In the next stage of artificial intelligence adoption, banks will use AI to help understand the intentions and emotions of customers and enable better interactions, according to a new report from Accenture. According to the report, Accenture Banking Technology Vision 2017, more than three-quarters (78%) of bankers believe that AI will enable simpler user interfaces that will help banks create a more human-like customer experience. In addition, four out of five respondents (79%) believe that AI will revolutionize the way banks gather information and interact with customers, and three-quarters (76%) believe that within three years, banks will deploy AI as their primary method for interacting with customers. "Consumers' diverse needs and priorities are forcing financial services firms to redefine how they interact with them to determine the best products and services to meet individuals' needs," said Alan McIntyre, a senior managing director at Accenture and head of the company's Banking practice. "AI-enabled tools can help banks identify consumer preferences and empower their workforces to react with insight and emotional intelligence, which is essential for the development of meaningful consumer relationships. The challenge will be how quickly banks can implement these new technologies, many of which are not compatible with their existing IT infrastructure."


Google and other tech giants grapple with the ethical concerns raised by the AI boom

With great power comes great responsibility--and artificial-intelligence technology is getting much more powerful. Companies in the vanguard of developing and deploying machine learning and AI are now starting to talk openly about ethical challenges raised by their increasingly smart creations. "We're here at an inflection point for AI," said Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research, at MIT Technology Review's EmTech conference this week. "We have an ethical imperative to harness AI to protect and preserve over time." Horvitz spoke alongside researchers from IBM and Google pondering similar issues.

SK Telecom to Unveil Autonomous Vehicle Control Platform in Second Half of 2017

SK Telecom will unveil its autonomous vehicle control platform as early as the second half of this year. With sequential technology upgrades, the company plans to grade up with market leaders such as Google, Tesla and Intel by 2020. According to industry sources on March 29, the Network Research Institute of SK Telecom is currently developing autonomous car control platform "T Remote Eye," which means an eye that can look through even remote areas. The new platform is expected to be a core of self-driving car services. T Remote Eye will be able to manage and analyze data, manage devices, assist drivers and protect security and authentication systems.


Hon Hai posts surprise profit rise after record iPhone sales

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. reported an unexpected rise in quarterly earnings after the main assembler of Apple Inc.'s devices rode record iPhone sales during the pivotal holiday shopping period. The world's biggest contract manufacturer of electronics reported a 30 percent increase in net income to 68.8 billion Taiwan dollars ($2.3 billion) in the three months ended December, according to Bloomberg calculations derived from previously released data. Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn Technology Group, derives about half its sales from Apple, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. The world's most valuable company shipped an unprecedented 78.3 million iPhones during the October-December quarter, despite its latest device representing a modest update on its predecessor. Optimism around Apple's iPhone for 2017 -- the 10th anniversary of the iconic device -- has driven the Taiwanese company's stock close to a decade high.
