In message to North Korea, U.S. military shows off massive surveillance drone
In what is likely a warning to nuclear-armed North Korea, the U.S. military on Wednesday showed off to media its Global Hawk surveillance drone, which is temporarily deployed to its Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo. The massive drone, with a wingspan of about 40 meters and a length of about 15 meters, can fly for long durations at altitudes higher than manned aircraft. The main focus of the deployment is believed to be to collect surveillance data on the North's nuclear- and missile-related facilities as well Chinese military activity in the Western Pacific. The aircraft is one of five Global Hawks sent to Yokota from their home base in Guam to avoid the harsh summer typhoon season that annually hits the Pacific island. The drones are scheduled to operate out of Yokota until the end of October.
SoftBank said to take $4 billion stake in U.S. chip-maker Nvidia
SoftBank Group has quietly amassed a $4 billion stake in Nvidia, making it the fourth-largest shareholder in the graphics chip-maker, according to people familiar with the situation. SoftBank, which just closed its Vision Fund, disclosed it owned an unspecified amount of Nvidia stock when it announced $93 billion of commitments to the technology investment fund Saturday. A holding of 4.9 percent, just under the amount that would require a regulatory disclosure in the U.S., would be worth about $4 billion. A stake in Nvidia fits with SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son's plans to become the biggest investor in technology over the next decade, with bets on emerging trends such as artificial intelligence. Under its founder, Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia has become one of the leaders of the charge by chip-makers to provide the underpinnings of machine intelligence in everything from data centers to automobiles.

"AI is critical to our future," said Christopher Kang, a budding computer scientist from Richland, Washington, who won an ISEF award in the robotics and intelligent machines category. "Humans have a limit as to how much data we can analyze," he said.

Google Unleashes AlphaGo in China--But Good Luck Watching It There
When AlphaGo topped the grandmaster Lee Sedol last year in Seoul, South Korea, becoming the first machine to beat a professional at the ancient game of Go, it grabbed the attention of the entire country--and beyond. This surprisingly powerful machine, built by researchers at Google's DeepMind artificial intelligence lab, also captured so many imaginations in China, the birthplace of Go, where Google says more than 60 million people watched that match from across the internet. Now AlphaGo is playing a Chinese grandmaster here in Wuzhen, China, an ancient city near the heart of the country's tech industry. The match between AlphaGo and Ke Jie, currently ranked number one in the world, seems like the perfect PR opportunity for a company that hopes to expand its presence in China in the years to come. AI wins as Google algorithm beats Chinese master in ancient game of Go
Google's computer algorithm AlphaGo narrowly beat the world's top-ranked player in the ancient Chinese board game of Go on Tuesday, earning praise for apparently surpassing human abilities in one of the last games that machines have yet to dominate and reaffirming the arrival of what its developers tout as a groundbreaking new form of artificial intelligence. AlphaGo took the first of three scheduled games against brash Chinese 19-year-old Ke Jie, the world's No. 1 player, who after the match anointed the program as the new "Go god." For the first time, AlphaGo was quite humanlike. In the past it had some weaknesses. But now I feel its understanding of Go and the judgment of the game is beyond our ability.

Even though research and advisory firm Gartner says 30% of web browsing will be screenless by 2020, Purna Virji, senior Bing Ads PPC training manager, told marketers at the Inbounder on Monday (May 22) not to panic. Pointing to a Cortana video in which women plan a 30th birthday party in Las Vegas without any landing pages and instead rely on digital assistants to do the heavy lifting, Virji noted this is where consumers are headed, but she also reassured the Inbounder audience while there will be a shift away from screens, voice won't kill screens – just like mobile didn't kill desktop. According to Virji, we are training artificial intelligence (AI) to be human-like so that it looks at something, understands it, recognizes it and responds back – like Microsoft's how-old.net, or the #HowOldRobot, which is learning to understand faces and tell users how old they look, and Xiaoice in China, a social assistant on networks like Weibo and Touchpal – and who Virji said is designed to be users' friend. Like, say, if you tell Xiaoice you broke up with your boyfriend, she'll put you on a 30-day breakup plan, Virji said. As a result, Xiaoice has 40 million active monthly users – and 25% have told her they love her.

The event made headlines the world over, including in The New York Times, as a sign of the increasing strength of artificial intelligence versus human brainpower. On Tuesday, AlphaGo was at it again. This time, the Google artificial intelligence program took on the top-ranked Chinese Go player, Ke Jie, in Wuzhen, China, as part of a three-game match. AlphaGo was victorious in the first game, writes Paul Mozur, a New York Times technology reporter, causing Mr. Ke to call the program "like a god of Go."
