Uber posts $708 million loss and says finance head left
Uber posted a $708 million loss in the most recent quarter and said its head of finance is leaving the company, the latest executive to depart in what has been a very tough year to date. Uber told The Associated Press Thursday that its first-quarter loss was narrower than the $991 million loss it posted in the previous quarter. It had revenue of $3.4 billion, up 18 percent from the final three months of last year. Even before the announced departure of head of finance Gautam Gupta, which the company announced Thursday, Uber has struggled . The San Francisco company recently lost its head of communications, president and other senior executives as it faces allegations of sexism and sexual harassment in the workplace.

ARM Targets New Processors at Machine Learning
ARM Ltd. joined a growing roster of processor specialists zeroing in on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications with the introduction of two new processor cores, one emphasizing performance, and the other efficiency. The chip intellectual property vendor unveiled its high-end Cortex-A75 paired with its "high-efficiency" Cortex A-55 processors during this week's Computex 2017 event in Taipei, Taiwan. Along with greater efficiency and processing horsepower, the chipmaker is positioning its latest processors as filling the gap in cloud computing by boosting data processing and storage on connected devices. Along with accelerating AI development, ARM also is advancing its flexible processing approach that incorporates a so-called "big" and "LITTLE" processor core configuration into a single computing cluster. That architecture is based on the assumption that the highest CPU performance is required only about 10 percent of the time.

AI will be better than human workers at all tasks in 45 years, says Oxford University report
Experts believe artificial intelligence will be better than humans at all tasks within 45 years, according to a new report. However, some think that could happen much sooner. Researchers from the University of Oxford and Yale University have revealed the results of a study surveying "a larger and more representative sample of AI experts than any study to date", and they will concern people working in a wide range of industries. The O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence conference in New York is June 26-29, 2017. To train a machine learning system, you start with a lot of training data: millions of photos, for example. You divide that data into a training set and a test set. You use the training set to "train" the system so it can identify those images correctly. Then you use the test set to see how well the training works: how good is it at labeling a different set of images?

Now, a year after its release, Apple is ready to step up its educational repertoire further. With the June 5th release of Swift Playgrounds 1.5, Apple's app will now teach kids to program robots and drones as well.
