Sony fires at Xbox with arsenal of big PS4 games

The Japan Times

LOS ANGELES – Sony on Monday showed off rich, action-packed new PlayStation 4 video games, some for virtual reality, as it defended its crown as the top-selling new-generation console. The company focused on blockbuster games and intriguing new titles for PS4 at a press event on the eve of the opening of the major Electronic Entertainment Expo here. There was no mention of the Xbox One X console unveiled a day earlier by rival Microsoft in a heightened challenge to PS4. "PlayStation is home to all the biggest and best game franchises in the world," Sony Interactive Entertainment worldwide studios chairman Shawn Layden said during a rapid-fire presentation of video trailers. The line-up included the first "Uncharted" game to feature a heroine in place of the "Nathan Drake" hero, a "God of War" sequel with a mighty father-son theme, and a pulse-pounding title starring "Spiderman" of Marvel Comics fame. The event also unveiled a version of the hit fantasy role-playing game "Skyrim" tailored for play on PlayStation virtual reality gear.

HSBC internet banking not working: Customers told to clear their cache to see their cash

The Independent - Tech

HSBC's internet banking has stopped working for its customers. The bank has told people to try flushing out their browser – emptying their cache and cookies – if they want to get to their money. Customers are reporting that the fix does appear to work, and makes the internet banking services work like normal. But there's no obvious way that people would find out about the fix, since people can't load up the website properly. Why the 'Mummy' reboot unraveled in the U.S. -- and what it means for Universal's monster plans

Los Angeles Times

Universal Pictures built its legacy with horror movies featuring Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man during the heydays of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi in the 1930s and '40s. More recently, the studio has made a well-publicized bet that it can create a series of successful films by bringing those creatures back from the dead. But its long-gestating plan to transform old-school monsters into modern-day blockbusters hit a snag last weekend, as the big-budget Tom Cruise movie "The Mummy" flopped at the domestic box office. The weak opening underscores the challenges facing studios as they seek to revive old franchises for contemporary audiences that have more options than going to the multiplex. "This is a brand they're trying to create, and it's a horrible start," said Jeff Bock, a box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "There is a learning curve, and that's what Universal will probably write this off as." Studios have always relied on sequels and reboots to capitalize on the popularity of well-known material.

THAAD Site Under Threat By North Korea? South Korea Accuses Pyongyang Of Spying Using Drone In Seongju Region

International Business Times

North Korea has been accused of spying on South Korea after a suspected Pyongyang drone was spotted on the site of a U.S. missile interceptor system, Seoul's military officials said Tuesday. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system, which is designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles, is being deployed in Seongju in order to protect South Korea from Pyongyang's growing threats. According to Yonhap News, the small unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a Sony-made camera was found last week on a mountain near the inter-Korean border. The drone had apparently crashed close to the THAAD site. The South's military took the drone in custody and analysed the content of the 64-gigabyte memory chip.

Amazon Uses Its Machine Learning Tools for Lending

#artificialintelligence

When talking about machine learning algorithms, Amazon definitely comes to mind. The e-commerce giant has (arguably) the most sophisticated ML toolset around that is uses for drone deliveries, online tailors, or its AWS offering. Turns out, Amazon's lesser known operation – small business lending – is also powered by machine learning, Bank Innovation has learned. Since the launch of its SME lending program in 2012, the company has issued more than $3 billion in total loans, with more than $1 billion issued in the past 12 months, Amazon announced today. In total, more than 20,000 "invited" businesses received those loans.

China's AI Advances for Drones to Enable 'Swarm Intelligence' Collection

The 119 drones underwent catapult-assisted take-offs and performed aerial formations, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday. The CETC said "swarm intelligence" is regarded as the core of the artificial intelligence of unmanned systems and the future of intelligent unmanned systems. The huge scale of low cost and multi-function UAVs could be used in risky tasks such as emergency communications. CETC engineer Zhao Yanjie said since drones were invented in 1917, intelligent swarms have "changed the rules of the game." In November 2016, the CETC launched 67 drones during the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, breaking the previous record of 50 drones by the US Navy, CCTV reported.

Here's Everything Sony Just Announced at the PlayStation E3 Show

TIME - Tech

After Microsoft's Sunday afternoon salvo for its 4K-angled Xbox One X games console (and rejoinder to rival Sony's boutique PlayStation 4 Pro), it was Sony's turn to argue the case for its PlayStation platform suite. Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Shawn Layden took the stage to fete the company's software lineup. "We have an even more diverse range of blockbuster games coming soon," he said. "PlayStation is home to all the biggest and best franchises in the world." And then he vanished, making way for an hour of riveting game trailers intended to express the company's confidence in what it views as its brand's broad and idiosyncratic mix of gaming experiences.
