Virtual-to-real Deep Reinforcement Learning: Continuous Control of Mobile Robots for Mapless Navigation

We present a learning-based mapless motion planner by taking the sparse 10-dimensional range findings and the target position with respect to the mobile robot coordinate frame as input and the continuous steering commands as output. Traditional motion planners for mobile ground robots with a laser range sensor mostly depend on the obstacle map of the navigation environment where both the highly precise laser sensor and the obstacle map building work of the environment are indispensable. We show that, through an asynchronous deep reinforcement learning method, a mapless motion planner can be trained end-to-end without any manually designed features and prior demonstrations. The trained planner can be directly applied in unseen virtual and real environments. The experiments show that the proposed mapless motion planner can navigate the nonholonomic mobile robot to the desired targets without colliding with any obstacles.

First there was the story of the all-girl Afghanistan team, which was denied visas to attend for unknown reasons. Then there was the post-competition story: All six teens on the Burundi team were reported missing on Wednesday, the day after the competition ended, with reports that two of them were headed to Canada. At the last minute, the Afghan team did get visas. They waved their country's flag during the parade of nations at the event's opening ceremonies.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has unveiled the first images captured by its spherical camera drone on the International Space Station. 'Int-Ball' arrived at the ISS on June 4, and can be controlled from the ground to gather photos and videos of its surroundings in the space environment. The camera can also navigate autonomously, and scientists are aiming to improve its capabilities so it can move and record'anywhere at any time' without human intervention. Artificial intelligence suggests recipes based on food photos

There are few things social media users love more than flooding their feeds with photos of food. Yet we seldom use these images for much more than a quick scroll on our cellphones. Researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) believe that analyzing photos like these could help us learn recipes and better understand people's eating habits. In a new paper with the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), the team trained an artificial intelligence system called Pic2Recipe to look at a photo of food and be able to predict the ingredients and suggest similar recipes. "In computer vision, food is mostly neglected because we don't have the large-scale datasets needed to make predictions," says Yusuf Aytar, an MIT postdoc who co-wrote a paper about the system with MIT Professor Antonio Torralba.


Google responds to rumours of a major redesign for its iconic homepage

Google has denied suggestions that its iconic desktop homepage is in line for a major redesign. The company this week unveiled a new feed experience that will transform the look of its mobile app with the addition of cards, videos and news stories. Nintendo planning a mini version of its N64 console?

Just weeks after Nintendo revealed it's bringing back the revered Super NES console in miniature form, a new trademark filing suggests the firm could also be resurrecting the N64. The company filed a single black-and-white image depicting a Nintendo 64 controller to the European Union Intellectual Property Office this week. While Nintendo has not officially announced plans to launch a mini N64, the move appears to follow in the footsteps of the Classic Edition consoles that came before it, as similar trademark filings preceded both NES Classic and Super NES Classic. The company filed a single black-and-white image depicting a Nintendo 64 controller to the European Union Intellectual Property Office this week. Gamers on the NeoGAF forum were quick to point out its similarity to steps that took place ahead of the firm's other mini consoles Nintendo launched the NES Classic mini console at the end of last year.

AI is a rare case where I think we need to be proactive in regulation instead of reactive.
