Industry 4.0 or Factory 4.0
Industry 4.0 has been under spotlight in past few years, and seems it will only get more attention in years to come. I certainly paid enough attention by switching my job recently to focus on Industry 4.0. Only month 2 in my new role, I do have some thoughts/observations to share. Today's topic is: Are we working on Industry 4.0 or just Factory 4.0? To start with, the translation of Industry 4.0 into Chinese seems more like Factory 4.0, as it is called "Made in China 2025".

Tesla's newest car is its cheapest ever, by a long way. But that doesn't mean you can actually buy it. The company has released its Model 3, the long-promised affordable version of its innovative electric vehicle. It costs half as much as the cars Tesla has made before – but won't arrive until at least 2018. There are about 500,000 people already on the waiting list, who've given Elon Musk's company a deposit to reserve their car.

Artificial intelligence, more commonly known under AI acronym, has become a very hot topic these days. Forrester Research forecasts a 300 percent growth of AI investment this year. Toyota invests $100 million in fund for AI, UBS is trying to bring AI to its investment bank's operations, while VCs frivolously dream of replacing all of us with AI to cut costs. Some people even feel embarrassed because they have never used or implemented AI in their office or home. The future of work in the era of artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is fast changing the world. The premise that intelligent machines will perform tasks more efficiently and at a lower cost than human beings is by no means far-fetched. The challenges facing the workers of the future are multiplying before our very eyes. Some of the most vulnerable jobs in the transition to automation, robotics and artificial intelligence are related to transport, mechanical work in factories and customer service. But no sector, be it health, finance or even the military, is excluded.

One taxi driver said he had noticed a 20 percent rise in passenger traffic since using the AI prediction system. In downtown Tokyo, just like in most major cities, taxi drivers make an educated guess as to where they might find their next paying passenger. Years of experience have honed their prediction skills to pinpoint customers depending on location, the time of day and weather. But even with this knowledge, tracking down passengers is still a hit and miss science with many drivers saying they can cruise around for up to two hours without finding a fare. Japan's biggest mobile phone operator, NTT Docomo, wants to change all that.
Neuroevolution: A different kind of deep learning
Early price ends August 4. Neuroevolution is making a comeback. Prominent artificial intelligence labs and researchers are experimenting with it, a string of new successes have bolstered enthusiasm, and new opportunities for impact in deep learning are emerging. Maybe you haven't heard of neuroevolution in the midst of all the excitement over deep learning, but it's been lurking just below the surface, the subject of study for a small, enthusiastic research community for decades. And it's starting to gain more attention as people recognize its potential. Put simply, neuroevolution is a subfield within artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that consists of trying to trigger an evolutionary process similar to the one that produced our brains, except inside a computer. In other words, neuroevolution seeks to develop the means of evolving neural networks through evolutionary algorithms. When I first waded into AI research in the late 1990s, the idea that brains could be evolved inside computers resonated with my sense of adventure. At that time, it was an unusual, even obscure field, but I felt a deep curiosity and affinity. The result has been 20 years of my life thinking about this subject, and a slew of algorithms developed with outstanding colleagues over the years, such as NEAT, HyperNEAT, and novelty search. In this article, I hope to convey some of the excitement of neuroevolution as well as provide insight into its issues, but without the opaque technical jargon of scientific articles. I have also taken, in part, an autobiographical perspective, reflecting my own deep involvement within the field.
IIT Delhi hosting a hackathon on AI
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is hosting a week long hackathon on artificial intelligence starting Friday (July 28 – August 4). The main objective of the hackathon is to bring together young talent in the AI space. This hackathon is being led by Anshul Bhagi, an MIT/Harvard alumnus who is also the co-director of OpenEd.ai, a non-profit organisation committed to developing and promoting open-source AI for education. Among other partners for the event are Niti Aayog, Omidyar Network (venture capital firm), IBM, Amazon Web Services, Google Developer Groups, Bhagi shared. "The grand prize is of $6000 sponsored by Omidyar. These organizations are offering a total of $17,000 as prize money for participants," Bhagi said.
