A Wallflower At The Robotics Orgy?
Fanuc Corporation (FANUC) (OTCPK:FANUY) just doesn't fire the imagination like the robotics companies pumping out weekly press releases about their latest highest-tech applications do. What too many robotics-are-cool, great-story, neat-concept investors are looking for in a robotics company? What might be the considerably more interesting story, if only we are willing to learn more about it. FANUC (an acronym for Fuji Automatic Numerical Controls โ Fujitsu spun it off decades ago) is not in the artificial intelligence business. And at an ETF I like for the broadest exposure to the field of robotics, Robo-Stox Global Robotics and Automation (ROBO), FANUC is only the 11th largest holding, well below UAV maker AeroVironment (NASDAQ:AVAV) and Roomba vacuum cleaner marketer iRobot (NASDAQ:IRBT).
Parsing gender stereotypes in Japan's media landscape
Tomomi Inada's resignation as defense minister ended a tenure that often made reporters wonder if her transgressions had more to do with ignorance than with incompetence. It would be wrong to associate her failures with her sex, though there were some in the media who harped on her fashion sense or supposed emotional instability as indications that she wasn't suitable for the job. Inada didn't actively discourage these indications. In June, she addressed the second plenary session of the International Institute of Strategic Studies' Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, where she expressed in English how privileged she felt to "share the podium" with other defense ministers, namely Marise Payne of Australia and Sylvie Goulard of France, saying that "We belong to the same gender โฆ the same generation and, most importantly, we are all good looking." As mentioned in a June 14 article in the Huffington Post, Mayumi Mori, the Asahi Shimbun Singapore correspondent, noted that Inada was obviously making a joke "to relieve tension," and that there were a few chuckles in the hall.
Global Asset Management 2017: The Innovator's Advantage
The growing challenges confronting asset management were confirmed by the industry's global performance in 2016. For the first time since the 2008 financial crisis, the revenue pool of traditional managers fell worldwide, along with their profits. Margins contracted as fee pressures continued to increase. Assets under management (AuM) returned to growth, largely thanks to rising asset values on financial markets. Net new flows, the industry's wellspring of growth, remains tepid and little changed from recent years.
Capturing Low-Probability, High-Impact Events 'Black Swans' in Economic and Financial Models
Capturing the effects of Low-Probability, High-Impact "Black Swans" in the existing stochastic and deterministic models is tremendously Important. On this page, I would like to share with the members an open access, peer reviewed published research findings of my PhD thesis on how to capture the effects of Low-Probability, High-Impact Events in our existing economic and financial models. I shall begin with the incorporation of fat-tailed effects of the underlying assets probability distribution in the popular LOGIT and PROBIT MODELS. INTRODUCTION The Global financial markets have experienced series of financial and economic crises right from the inception and from generation to generation. Banks, Companies and the world economy experienced catastrophic deterioration and serious corporate failures by systemic risk effect.
Alexa can help in the kitchen
Cooking is a social activity. Kids help in the kitchen. People get together for a potluck and trade cooking tips all evening. Amazon's virtual assistant, Alexa, has become commonplace in many homes, picking your music and helping you book Uber rides. Many Alexa commands make Amazon's Echo essential.
A Whole New Way to Hack Self-Driving Cars
August is supposed to be a slow news month. People plan summer beach vacations on this presumption. Hackers, though, apparently hate sun and sand because this past week has been incredibly active on the security news front. WIRED broke the scoop of leaked audio from Jared Kushner's welcome conversation with west wing interns, which revealed he has a less than nuanced grasp of the details of the Palestinian-Israeli conflictโa global problem he's been taxed with fixing. Making the nightmares of Amazon Echo owners everywhere come true, hackers turned one of those devices into a wiretap.
Infosec Pros: AI Could Soon Be Used Against Us
A majority of information security professionals believe that artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be used in attacks against them in the next 12 months, according to new research from Cylance. The security vendor polled Black Hat USA attendees last week to gauge their thoughts on the rapidly emerging technology. It revealed that 62% of them believe there's a high possibility that AI will soon be used offensively by hackers. However, this will only accelerate the use of the same tech for defensive purposes as organizations look for smarter ways and more efficient ways to stop increasingly automated attacks, claimed Cylance. The vendor provides AI-based advanced threat protection rather than more traditional detect and respond approaches, claiming it enables customers to switch on "pre-execution attack prevention".
Opinion: Microsoft now considers AI a top priority โ and it's about time - AI News
Microsoft should be a pioneer alongside Google when it comes to artificial intelligence, but the company only now appears to consider it a priority. In the company's annual report for the 2017 fiscal year, AI is now mentioned on six occasions. Compared to not a single mention in the previous report, it's clear Microsoft is now putting more of its focus on artificial intelligence. Microsoft also indicates this in their corporate vision statement: "Our strategic vision is to compete and grow by building best-in-class platforms and productivity services for an intelligent cloud and an intelligent edge infused with AI." AI is only just starting to get real momentum (hence why this very publication has been launched, hello!) but it seems to be another case of where the company has slumbered, and that's incredibly frustrating because it has much to contribute. Microsoft is in a very advantageous position to lead in AI.
