Here's the problem: When a self-driving car has to make snap decisions, it needs answers fast. Even slight delays in updating road and weather conditions could mean longer travel times or dangerous errors. But those smart vehicles of the near-future don't quite have the huge computing power to process the data necessary to avoid collisions, chat with nearby vehicles about optimizing traffic flow, and find the best routes that avoid gridlocked or washed-out roads. The logical source of that power lies in the massive server farms where hundreds of thousands of processors can churn out solutions.

Government mulls setting up AI center to analyze genetic data of dementia patients

The health ministry may set up a data center to analyze the genomes of dementia patients as part of efforts to better treat the brain disorder, ministry sources said Wednesday. Using artificial intelligence to interpret a vast amount of genome data, the full set of an person's genetic information, the facility would be the nation's first such hub, the sources said. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will request outlays to finance the project under the state budget for fiscal 2018. Dementia is caused when nerve cells in the brain die or fail, leading to impaired memory and judgment. Although slowing the progress is possible in some cases, there is no established treatment to address the root cause of the symptoms.

The three countries are leading an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Malcolm Frank, head of strategy at leading outsourcing firm Cognizant, told CNNMoney in an interview. Frank is the co-author of a recent book entitled "What to Do When Machines Do Everything," on the impact artificial intelligence will have on the global economy in the coming years. "I think it's three horses in the race, and that's probably the wrong metaphor because they are all going to win," he said. "They are just going to win differently."
