Recognizing Detailed Human Context In-the-Wild from Smartphones and Smartwatches

The ability to automatically recognize a person's behavioral context can contribute to health monitoring, aging care and many other domains. Validating context recognition in-the-wild is crucial to promote practical applications that work in real-life settings. We collected over 300k minutes of sensor data with context labels from 60 subjects. Unlike previous studies, our subjects used their own personal phone, in any way that was convenient to them, and engaged in their routine in their natural environments. Unscripted behavior and unconstrained phone usage resulted in situations that are harder to recognize. We demonstrate how fusion of multi-modal sensors is important for resolving such cases. We present a baseline system, and encourage researchers to use our public dataset to compare methods and improve context recognition in-the-wild.


HAX and Airbus Want to Help You Build Your Flying Car Company

HAX, the hardware startup investor and accelerator, along with Airbus, is looking for start-ups to join a four-month accelerator program aimed to advance developments in urban air mobility, a.k.a. "Transportation in megacities needs fresh ideas to improve the way we live," said Mathias Thomsen, urban air mobility general manager at Airbus, in a press statement. "We believe that adding the vertical dimension to urban mobility will improve the current congested megacity transport systems." The selected startups will receive at least $100,000 in seed money, and spend four months in Shenzhen, China, turning their ideas into prototype with help from HAX and Airbus engineers. China installs over 20 million AI-equipped street cameras

China has installed over 20 million cutting-edge security cameras in what is believed to be the world's most advanced surveillance system. The camera system, facilitated with artificial intelligence technology, is part of the'Sky Net' operation, which is China's anti-corruption programme mainly aimed to track down fugitives. Such technology can identify a pedestrian or a motorist, which can help policemen in their search for criminals. The new technology can identify a person's age, gender and colour of clothes (left). Video footage posted by China Central Television in a documentary today displays what a real-time CCTV captures on screen.

If the concept becomes reality, a journey from New York to Shanghai can be completed in about 30 minutes. The surprise announcement means that Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp., which has already disrupted the aerospace industry with reusable launches, plans to ferry humans not just to distant planets but across this one as well. "If we are going to places like Mars, why not Earth?" Musk said Friday at the 68th International Astronautical Congress on Friday in Adelaide, Australia.

Maximizing the potential of disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence will require the right regulations and transparency on data usage, experts suggested at a forum in Singapore on Saturday. In a session of the Singapore Summit titled "Fostering inclusive growth: redefining policies and harnessing technological advancements to address societal challenges," the panelists were challenged with questions from the audience on how AI can be used for the good of society, as opposed to creating mass joblessness. Joseph Tsai, executive vice chairman of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, said companies and their management teams "need to establish trust with the people who entrust them with data." Tsai gave an example of sharing encrypted data with a rural cooperative to develop a lending model that manages credit risk, giving farmers access to the financial market. Meanwhile, Antoine Blondeau, co-founder and co-chairman of AI company Sentient Technologies, said that while there is merit to the notion that AI will take jobs away from people, it will not happen overnight.


Amazon bets big on machines, artificial intelligence to push market share in India

BENGALURU: Online giant Amazon, which has invested over Rs 13,800 crore in India, is relying heavily on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to goose up market share in the country. Rajeev Rastogi, director for machine learning at Amazon, said both transformative technologies are being used in several ways to improve customer experience. For instance, he said, apart from guiding sellers on categorisation, Amazon also tracks products that have high sales during festivities or holidays, and based on such factors, it suggests the best products and deals that can woo customers. All of these products and services are being built in India, he said. The Seattle-headquartered company soon plans to launch event-based deals in India.
