Single pixel change fools AI programs

#artificialintelligence

Computers can be fooled into thinking a picture of a taxi is a dog just by changing one pixel, suggests research. The limitations emerged from Japanese work on ways to fool widely used AI-based image recognition systems. Many other scientists are now creating "adversarial" example images to expose the fragility of certain types of recognition software. There is no quick and easy way to fix image recognition systems to stop them being fooled in this way, warn experts. In their research, Su Jiawei and colleagues at Kyushu University made tiny changes to lots of pictures that were then analysed by widely used AI-based image recognition systems.

What do you need to know about Chinese search engine Sogou?

#artificialintelligence

A few days ago, the news emerged that Chinese search engine Sogou (ๆœ็‹—) is aiming to raise up to $585 million in a U.S. Initial Public Offering. Sogou, which is owned by internet company Sohu, Inc., announced the terms for its proposed IPO on Friday. The news has caused a stir among those keeping an eye on the Chinese tech space, as Sogou is backed by Chinese tech giant Tencent, the company behind the hugely popular messaging apps WeChat and QQ. But for those of us who might not be up on the state of search in China, what do you need to know about Sogou, and how does its IPO play into the wider search landscape? And could there be any potential knock-on effects for the rest of the industry?

China Will Surpass US in AI Around 2025, Says Google's Eric Schmidt

#artificialintelligence

In April, as Eric Schmidt watched a computer program defeat China's top go player in a ground-breaking match in the Chinese city of Wuzhen, the executive chairman of Google's parent company was struck less by the considerable innovations displayed by human and machine than by the audience: "To me the more interesting thing [was that] all the top computer science people in China had shown up." It showed, Schmidt said, the importance placed on AI development by both the Chinese government and its people, and was a postcard from the future competition for AI dominance. "I'm assuming our [U.S.] lead will continue over the next five years and then that China will catch up extremely quickly," the Google leader told the Center for New American Security's Paul Scharre at the Artificial Intelligence & Global Security Summit on Wednesday. Schmidt doesn't like the term "arms race" to describe the U.S.-Chinese rivalry in artificial intelligence, in part because defining AI as a weapon is limiting at best and flatly inaccurate at worst. But it is a tool that can make one military, company, economy, and even nation much more effective than another. And China, he says, is positioning itself to devour the current U.S. advantage in just a few years.

Visual trick fools AI into thinking a turtle is really a rifle

New Scientist

When is a turtle not a turtle? It sounds like a bad riddle but this is a genuine conundrum for an artificial intelligence trained to identity objects. By subtly tweaking the pattern on the shell of a model turtle researchers were able to trick a neural network into misidentifying the object as a rifle. The results raise concerns about the accuracy of face recognition systems and the safety of driverless cars, for example. This is the latest case of what is known as an "adversarial example".

Apple fans queue outside stores for iPhone X

Daily Mail - Science & tech

With an eye-watering price tag of ยฃ999, these customers will be hoping for some decent bang for their buck. But that didn't put off Apple fans as the much-anticipated iPhone X's with its lush screen and facial-recognition skills tests the patience of consumers and investors with demand outstripping supply around the world. And those who managed to get their hands on one this morning will be pleased to know they are sitting on potential gold mines, with devices already listed for sale on auction website eBay for up to ยฃ15,000. The X is Apple's next generation smartphone that uses facial recognition software for the first time and is going on sale in cities worldwide today - with queues building at Apple Stores amid rumours of limited stock. Among the first to get the new device in Britain was reality TV contestant Marco Pierre White Jr, 22, the son of the celebrity chef, who joined the queue last night to pick up a phone for his girlfriend Francesca Suter.

Machine learning: platforms and developers will set the pace

#artificialintelligence

Despite having removed its search engine from China, Google appears to be actively promoting its TensorFlow machine learning platform there, rightly seeing it as the market of the future for this service. After appearances at several private events, use in universities and by opinion leaders TensorFlow looks set to become the development platform of choice for students, academics and workers, in an environment where the development of all things machine learning is a national priority, and where there seem to be fewer privacy limits on data generation. Google's interest highlights the importance of the burgeoning machine learning market, one that is taking shape as we speak. This is the top priority at Google: the company believes it will define competitiveness, with companies redefining their activities around it, while having to provide competence and skills in machine learning to all staff at practically all levels: acquisitions, platforms, a presence on third-party platforms such as Amazon's AWS and an apostolic zeal for a tool that many developers who use it regularly criticize harshly, but one that Google has committed itself to obtaining leadership in. The future of machine learning will largely be determined by developers, who will adapt applications to make use of it.

Three-Star General Wants AI in Every New Weapon System

#artificialintelligence

With artificial intelligence set to revolutionize how the military runs surveillance missions around the world, one top Defense Department official hopes to bring intelligent systems to the Pentagon's efforts both on and off the battlefield. As director of defense intelligence for warfighter support, Air Force Lt. Gen Jack Shanahan spearheaded Project Maven, a Pentagon initiative to rapidly turn drone surveillance footage into useful intelligence through machine learning. The tool is scheduled to launch by the end of the year. The Pentagon has long used drones over the Middle East to inform the fight against groups like ISIS. Though drone and camera technology have advanced significantly, the back end looks much the same as it did decades ago, with analysts still spending countless hours manually scrolling through video for points of interest.

Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Market โ€“ Grow At an Escalating Rate in the Forecast Time-frame. โ€“ MilTech

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered to be the next stupendous technological development, alike past developments such as the revolution of industries, the computer era, and the emergence of smartphone technology. Advances in image and voice recognition are driving the growth of the artificial intelligence market as improved image recognition technology is critical to offer enhanced drones, self-driving cars, and robotics. The AI market can be categorized based on solutions, technologies, end use, and geography. The two major factors enabling market growth are emerging AI technologies and growth in big data espousal. The growing prominence of artificial intelligence is enabling new players to venture into the market by offering niche application-specific solutions.

God of Go: The Rise of Superhuman Intelligence Without Human Knowledge - The Wire

#artificialintelligence

Siby Abraham is a computer scientist specialising in artificial intelligence. He is an associate professor and head of the department of mathematics and statistics at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Mumbai. How many years does it take for a child that does not know anything about English to master it at a Shakespearean level? Assume that there is no one to teach the child, and that the child only knows about the fundamentals of English grammar to begin with. Suppose also that there is no book, no help and no support (human or non-human) at all times.

Chatbots, AI, and What They Mean for Small Businesses

Today's generations have a lot to look forward to. The first man (or woman!) on Mars, the popularization of self-driving cars, and the first AI-powered robot to be granted citizenship by a country -- except that we don't have to look forward to that last one because it has already happened. Business Insider reports that Saudi Arabia has bestowed citizenship on a robot named Sophia. The ceremonial event was held in the capital city of Riyadh, ahead of the Future Investment Initiative. "I am very honored and proud of this unique distinction," Sophia told the audience, speaking on a panel.
