Artificial intelligence is helping doctors accurately diagnose eye disease in 96 per cent of cases at Dubai Diabetes Centre. Thousands of routine eye scans have been fed into an AI programme to identify retinal damage caused by diabetes in a trial during February -- UAE Innovation Month. The programme's success could now lead to it being permanently adopted at the centre in 2nd of December Street, as it is helping doctors treat more patients at an earlier stage. "To diagnose diabetic retinopathy, regular retinal imaging is required and in some cases optical coherence tomography is also used," said Dr M Hamed Farooqi, director of Dubai Diabetes Centre. "This imaging test provides cross-sectional images of the retina that show the thickness of the retina, which will help determine whether fluid has leaked into retinal tissue."

IDC Manufacturing Insights Worldwide Commercial Robotics program published its latest report titled "IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Robotics 2018 Predictions โ Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Implications", which highlights the top 10 predictions pertaining to the development and adoption of robotics in Asia Pacific (Excluding Japan) region from 2018 through 2021. Smart hotels on the rise in Singapore TTG Asia
Recent initiatives by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) are spurring technology take-up in the hospitality sector at an unprecedented rate, with hotels in the city increasingly adopting new solutions ranging from service delivery automation to integrated mobile applications and virtual concierges. With the revamping of Bayview Hotel into 30 Bencoolen, the hotel's 131 guest rooms are now fitted with smart room control units that allow the operations team to monitor room statuses and be alerted by any room faults in real time. Kevin Peeris, regional head, business development, Bayview International Hotels & Resorts, said: "(The use of technology) generates exciting opportunities to enhance productivity, increase effectiveness and create exceptional experiences for both staff and guests." Conrad Centennial Singapore uses eConnect, a similar system that "drastically reduces the time taken to solve issues by eliminating middle steps," said Heinrich Grafe, the hotel's general manager. Both hotels are also looking at introducing automation to traditional hospitality processes.

Pop Music Highlighter: Marking the Emotion Keypoints

The goal of music highlight extraction is to get a short consecutive segment of a piece of music that provides an effective representation of the whole piece. In a previous work, we introduced an attention-based convolutional recurrent neural network that uses music emotion classification as a surrogate task for music highlight extraction, for Pop songs. The rationale behind that approach is that the highlight of a song is usually the most emotional part. This paper extends our previous work in the following two aspects. First, methodology-wise we experiment with a new architecture that does not need any recurrent layers, making the training process faster. Moreover, we compare a late-fusion variant and an early-fusion variant to study which one better exploits the attention mechanism. Second, we conduct and report an extensive set of experiments comparing the proposed attention-based methods against a heuristic energy-based method, a structural repetition-based method, and a few other simple feature-based methods for this task. Due to the lack of public-domain labeled data for highlight extraction, following our previous work we use the RWC POP 100-song data set to evaluate how the detected highlights overlap with any chorus sections of the songs. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods over competing methods. Modeling reverse thinking for machine learning
Human inertial thinking schemes can be formed through learning, which are then applied to quickly solve similar problems later. However, when problems are significantly different, inertial thinking generally presents the solutions that are definitely imperfect. In such cases, people will apply creative thinking, such as reverse thinking, to solve problems. Similarly, machine learning methods also form inertial thinking schemes through learning the knowledge from a large amount of data. However, when the testing data are vastly difference, the formed inertial thinking schemes will inevitably generate errors. This kind of inertial thinking is called illusion inertial thinking. Because all machine learning methods do not consider illusion inertial thinking, in this paper we propose a new method that uses reverse thinking to correct illusion inertial thinking, which increases the generalization ability of machine learning methods. Experimental results on benchmark datasets are used to validate the proposed method.
Exactly Robust Kernel Principal Component Analysis

We propose a novel method called robust kernel principal component analysis (RKPCA) to decompose a partially corrupted matrix as a sparse matrix plus a high or full-rank matrix whose columns are drawn from a nonlinear low-dimensional latent variable model. RKPCA can be applied to many problems such as noise removal and subspace clustering and is so far the only unsupervised nonlinear method robust to sparse noises. We also provide theoretical guarantees for RKPCA. The optimization of RKPCA is challenging because it involves nonconvex and indifferentiable problems simultaneously. We propose two nonconvex optimization algorithms for RKPCA: alternating direction method of multipliers with backtracking line search and proximal linearized minimization with adaptive step size. Comparative studies on synthetic data and nature images corroborate the effectiveness and superiority of RKPCA in noise removal and robust subspace clustering.
Winter Olympics, Hubo and future of robots in South Korea
Daejeon, South Korea - During the 2018 Winter Olympics, South Korea deployed 85 robots of 11 different kinds at various locations. From providing information in various languages at Incheon Airport and offering water bottles in Pyeongchang at the Winter Games to skiing down the slopes, South Korea's efforts to showcase itself on the robotics map did not go unnoticed. One of those 85 robots was Hubo, a humanoid created by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, just over 130km from the capital Seoul. In December 2017, Hubo became the first robot to carry an Olympic flame. It walked around 150 metres to a wall before drilling a hole into it and passing the torch onto Professor Oh Jun-Ho, its creator and the person who headed the robotics programme at Pyeongchang 2018.
