Personalized Hey Siri - Apple
Apple introduced the "Hey Siri" feature with the iPhone 6 (iOS 8). This feature allows users to invoke Siri without having to press the home button. When a user says, "Hey Siri, how is the weather today?" the phone wakes up upon hearing "Hey Siri" and processes the rest of the utterance as a Siri request. The feature's ability to listen continuously for the "Hey Siri" trigger phrase lets users access Siri in situations where their hands might be otherwise occupied, such as while driving or cooking, as well as in situations when their respective devices are not within arm's reach. Imagine a scenario where a user is asking his or her iPhone 6 on the kitchen counter to set a timer while putting a turkey into the oven.
In Q1 2018, FinTech Startups Raise Record Amounts While Deal Counts Fall - Crunchbase News
Crunchbase News has covered the U.S. FinTech space a great deal since the start of the quarter. From looking at FinTech's early-stage stars of 2017 and 2018 to NYC's growing fintech scene, to traveling down south to Atlanta, which has a FinTech startup scene of its own. To get a hold on the space in Q1 2018, we take a look at venture dollar invested into U.S.-based FinTech startups quarter by quarter since 2016. Crunchbase News's definition of FinTech encompasses a broad range of startups that leverage deep learning technology and big data in order to streamline tax processes, make paying friends easier, and provide better insurance options.1 Since 2016, more than $15.6 billion has been invested in seed, early, and late-stage U.S.-based FinTech startups. Total dollar volume saw an increase of 25 percent year over year from 2016 to 2017.
This Chinese Facial Recognition Surveillance Company Is Now the World's Most Valuable AI Startup
SenseTime Group has raised $600 million from Alibaba Group Holding (baba) and other investors at a valuation of more than $3 billion, becoming the world's most valuable artificial intelligence startup. The company, which specializes in systems that analyze faces and images on an enormous scale, said it closed a Series C round in recent months in which Singaporean state investment firm Temasek Holdings and retailer Suning.com. SenseTime didn't outline individual investments, but Alibaba was said to have sought the biggest stake in the three-year-old startup. With the deal, SenseTime has doubled its valuation in a few months. Backed by Qualcomm (qcom), it underscores its status as one of a crop of homegrown firms spearheading Beijing's ambition to become the leader in AI by 2030.
Machine learning thwarted 'massive' Windows crypto-jacking attack
It said the attack was first noticed at noon on March 6, when Windows computers using Windows Defender antivirus began to report a new and rapidly growing campaign. Defender began to analyse and block the attack, initially removing it from over 80,000 computers. Over the course of the next 12 hours, the malware proliferated through Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. At least 400,000 machines were infected. The attack was unusually aggressive and spread far more rapidly than typical malware outbreaks.
'Malfunctioning' robot terrifies drinkers in a London pub
A'malfunctioning' robot named Fred has terrified drinkers in a London pub by smashing a pint glass while talking about a'robot invasion'. The hyper-realistic automaton, modeled to be an exact replica of London-based actor Tedroy Newell, sat down for a refreshing lager at The Prince Alfred pub in Maida Vale, in the west of the capital. Unsuspecting customers were unprepared for what came next, with the humanoid berating locals before crushing the drinking vessel in his hands. The robot, described as'indistinguishable from humans', was created as part of a stunt to promote TV Series Westworld. A'malfunctioning' robot has terrified shocked drinkers in a London pub, by smashing a pint glass and talking about a'robot invasion'.
Voicera acquires AI notetaker Wrappup to boost meeting summary on iOS and Android
Voicera today announced it has acquired Wrappup to expand its meeting assistant Eva to the AI note-taking app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Voicera has raised $20 million from some of the biggest names at the intersection of enterprise and AI, including Microsoft Ventures, Cisco Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and GV, formerly Google Ventures. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Cisco and Microsoft both shared plans last year to bring Spark Assistant and Cortana into the workplace and meeting rooms. With millions of G Suite customers and Alexa expanding into the workplace as well, Google Assistant may join other tech companies that want to bring their assistants into offices and meeting rooms.
One machine to rule them all: A 'Master Algorithm' may emerge sooner than you think
It's excusable if you didn't notice it when a scientist named Daniel J. Buehrer, a retired professor from the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan, published a white paper earlier this month proposing a new class of math that could lead to the birth of machine consciousness. Keeping up with all the breakthroughs in the field of AI can be exhausting, we know. Robot consciousness is a touchy subject in artificial intelligence circles. In order to have a discussion around the idea of a computer that can'feel' and'think,' and has it's own motivations, you first have to find two people who actually agree on the semantics of sentience. And if you manage that, you'll then have to wade through a myriad of hypothetical objections to any theoretical living AI you can come up with. We're just not ready to accept the idea of a mechanical species of'beings' that exist completely independently of humans, and for good reason: it's the stuff of science fiction – just like spaceships and lasers once were.
Frontier AI: How far are we from artificial "general" intelligence, really?
Another related area that has seen considerable acceleration is reinforcement learning – a technique where the AI teaches itself how to do something by trying again and again, separating good moves (that lead to rewards) from bad ones, and altering its approach each time, until it masters the skill. Reinforcement learning is another technique that goes back as far as the 1950s, and was considered for a long time an interesting idea that didn't work well. However, that all changed in late 2013 when DeepMind, then an independent startup, taught an AI to play 22 Atari 2600 games, including Space Invaders, at a superhuman level. In 2016, its AlphaGo, an AI trained with reinforcement learning, beat the South Korean Go master Lee Sedol. Then just a few months ago in December 2017, AlphaZero, a more generalized and powerful version of AlphaGo used the same approach to master not just Go, but also chess and shogi. Without any human guidance other than the game rules, AlphaZero taught itself how to play chess at a master level in only four hours.
