Presto was designed and built from scratch to be a fast SQL query engine. It follows the classic MPP SQL engine design in which query processing is parallelized over a cluster of machines. Japan to place accident liability on self-driving car owners
Japan plans to hold owners responsible for accidents involving self-driving cars, like regular vehicles, easing liability concerns among automakers and likely accelerating commercialization efforts. The policy is part of the guidelines governing autonomous cars unveiled by the government's Council on Investments for the Future Friday. The plan is to submit related legislation to the Diet as early as 2019. "By taking concrete steps toward a legal framework, I would like Japan to take the lead in creating international rules," said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a council meeting. The guidelines are meant to set regulatory and legal direction before self-driving cars become widespread -- likely in the first half of the next decade.
AI Goes Live for Clinical Pathology
A healthcare provider in Israel has begun to use what its vendor claims is the first-ever artificial intelligence-driven (AI) pathology diagnostic tool to go live in a clinical setting, according to an announcement. Maccabi Healthcare Services, which runs a pathology institute responsible for 160,000 histology accessions every year, recently started leveraging Ibex Medical Analytics' Second Read system, the tech developer said yesterday. The launch came after a pilot period in which the AI tool "identified isolated major errors" regarding prostate core needle biopsies, which were incorrectly diagnosed benign, according to Ibex. Although this is not the first clinical application of AI, Ibex said it is the first in this particular space, helping patients with prostate cancer and adding to a growing portfolio of the technology's diagnostic capabilities. Robots build Ikea chair in under ten minutes
It is the task that tests many of the most skilled, patient humans. But the robots appear to be catching up. A new robot has been taught to successfully put together a piece of Ikea furniture. It could one day leave the tough job of finding the right screws and putting them in the right place to the past โ leaving humans never to have to struggle to put together their new chair again. Doing so takes even longer than the time required to put together flat-pack furniture: the scientists spent three years programming the robot to make sure that its arms, grippers, sensors and 3D cameras could put together the chair.
