While we often think of maps in terms of information that already exists in the spatial domain, such as building addresses or GPS coordinates, the written word contains a tremendous volume of locative insights. What happens when we combine fulltext geocoding with the power of the cloud to analyze hundreds of billions of words of global news coverage to map the hidden geography of the language of news? Language is inextricably interconnected with geography. Each day as we consume the stream of information available about the world around us, we are inundated with mentions of location. The news media in particular is saturated with locative references, anchoring our understanding of the world in space.

Ericsson automates SoftBank's RAN with machine learning, analytics
Japan-based mobile operator SoftBank improved its radio access design in the Tokai region by using a network automation service from Ericsson. Ericsson's elastic radio access (RAN) design uses machine learning and big data analytics to enable automation. The end result is an improved user experience and a reduction in lead time of 40% over traditional network design methods. While SoftBank is seeing improved benefits now with the new design, which it will use in other geographical areas, automation and the use of artificial intelligence will have a big impact in the near future on the rollout of 5G technologies and designs. "I would say that this is a solid incremental step toward planning and operating much denser radio networks, which 5G will certainly need," said IDC's Andy Hicks, research director, EMEA telecommunications and networking.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal gives Knowlarity access to the Mumbai-based company's artificial intelligence and machine learning products. It also expands the Singapore-based cloud telephony service provider customer base, adding Sunoray's small and medium customers. "An AI revolution is underway right now, but I believe it needs to be complemented with a design revolution," said Jim Guszcza, chief data scientist at Deloitte Consulting LLP, as quoted in a Wall Street Journal piece. "We don't want to ascribe to AI algorithms more intelligence than is really there. They may be smarter than humans at certain tasks, but more generally we need to make sure algorithms are designed to help us, not do an end run around our common sense."
Chinese school uses facial recognition to make kids pay attention
Civilian surveillance in China has seen a boom in recent times, with facial recognition leading the charge in the technologies used to keep tabs on the population. Police are scanning travelers with facial recognition glasses, authorities are using the tech to monitor ethnic minorities -- now the Orwellian technology has a new target: kids. Three cameras have been installed above a blackboard at Hangzhou Number 11 High School in eastern China. The system identifies seven different facial expressions -- neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, angry, scared and surprised -- to determine whether children are focused on their lessons, and if they're not, the computer will feed this back to the teacher. So far the technology is in just one classroom, but will roll out across the school by the summer. What else can surveillance cameras do in classroom other than exam supervision?

The resulting alliance for big data analysis will focus on development of automated driving technologies. ALBERT, founded in 2005 and based in Tokyo, currently employs around 100 people. It specializes in areas including the development of analysis algorithms and system introduction; supporting the use of AI; products and services using machine learning; and supporting the discipline of data science. It has recently been working on analysis of imagery in relation to automated driving. Ken Koibuchi, executive general manager in charge of developing automated driving at Toyota's advanced R&D and engineering division, said in a statement: "We believe that AI technologies are indispensable for achieving our vision of'safe and smooth mobility for all people'.

SoftBank, Ericsson bring machine learning to mobile network design Internet of Business
Japanese technology giant SoftBank has partnered with Swedish telecoms provider Ericsson to trial new radio technology that uses machine learning to design networks and improve performance. SoftBank, whose investments in emerging technologies include Uber and robotics specialist Boston Dynamics, is a leading mobile network operator in Japan and one of the country's largest organisations. The company has been implementing Ericsson's machine intelligence method for advanced radio network design in the Tokai region of the country. Ericsson's technology relies on a thorough analysis of the radio network environment. This includes assessing cell coverage overlap, signal strength, and receiver diversity.
AI traffic cops all set to take over Delhi's anarchic streets from policemen
Soon, artificial intelligence (AI) could automate away big, burly, bald policemen waving frantically at snarled-up traffic, sounding raucous and insistent whistles, because here come the AI traffic cops -- who are all set to take over Delhi's anarchic streets, from human policemen, following a central government nod for Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Daily News and Analysis reported. ITMS will gradually automate away the traffic system's manual interface to a minimum, with the first phase likely to get over by April 2019. Explaining the tech, a police officer in the report said: "Ideally, a traffic official on the road would leave the carriageway open for equal minutes in order to ensure smooth flow of traffic. In such a scenario, not all carriageways will have heavy volume. With AI coming in place, the signals would work according to the volume of traffic on each road."
