Researchers develop electronic skins that wirelessly activate fully soft robots

A research team of Seoul National University has developed a skin-like electronic system that is soft, thin, lightweight and can wirelessly activate soft robots through a simple lamination process. They developed an electronic skin (e-skin) pair as a two-part, wireless soft driving system based on fully printable, stretchable hybrid electronics. One part is the e-skin for input sensing at a human side, and the other for activating soft robots. The e-skins are soft (same material for the target robot body), thin ( 1 mm), and lightweight ( 0.8 g) and also feature the spatially fragmented circuit configuration with a slew of miniature IC components (standard dimension, 1.5 mm 1.5 mm). Therefore, they can be stretched and conformed onto the dynamic surface like human skin or soft robots.

Babylon AI Doctor To Be In New Samsung Devices PYMNTS.com

Babylon, the digital health startup out of the U.K., inked a deal with Samsung in which it will provide consumers with access to artificial intelligence-enabled doctors via smartphones. According to a report in the Financial Times, Samsung has agreed to preinstall the technology into its new devices, enabling consumers to set up a video appointment with a doctor or get a check of symptoms via Samsung's Health app. Babylon's software will be used in that respect to provide consumers with medical advice. The Financial Times reported that in the beginning, the technology will be found in any new Samsung smartphones in the U.K. only. The technology will eventually be launched around the world as part of Babylon's push into international markets.

After meeting Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday, Modi says they reiterated their commitment to a rules-based order for maritime security and called for an open, fair and transparent agreement. China is pitted against smaller neighbors in multiple disputes over islands, coral reefs and lagoons in waters crucial to global trade. Beijing has rejected accusations it's militarizing the area and has been working with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to reach a code of conduct to avoid frictions. Researchers at the World Bank have responded to that call by scouring the globe for the latest machine learning tools to transform our approach to tracking progress in the fight against poverty. "Collecting household survey data on poverty is expensive and time-consuming, which means that policy makers are often making decisions based on old data," said Asli Demirguc-Kunt, Director of Research at the World Bank. "Machine learning could drastically change the game, making poverty measurement cheaper and much closer to real-time." Machine learning is a field of computer science that allows computers to examine large bodies of data to identify patterns that data scientists would never find on their own.


A UK startup that uses AI to help you with GDPR has won $1m in funding

A UK startup that uses artificial intelligence to help businesses manage data and meet GDPR regulations has won $1 million in funding from a group of companies including Microsoft. Hazy has created a more secure data sharing system that lets people track and manage who has access to information, and generates GDPR compliant legal agreements. The company has won Microsoft's Innovate.AI global startup prize, which is open to small firms using AI to solve problems and improve lives. Hazy took home the Europe prize, along with up to $500,000 in Azure credits, Office 365 licences and $1 million in funding from M12, Microsoft's venture fund, and Notion Capital. Harry Keen, Chief Executive of Hazy, wrote in a blog post: "It's an amazing accolade for the Hazy team, which I'm proud to say is made up of some of the world's best AI and machine learning experts, thanks to our partnership with UCL. "Innovate.AI told us that they received hundreds of applications from startups across North America, Europe and Israel, all vying for their region's respective prize.


Alibaba's new autonomous robot delivers packages at a modest pace

Unlike its car vending machine concept, Alibaba's ideas for robots have been more mundane and mainly confined to warehouses (the same kind that Amazon uses). But today, the Chinese ecommerce titan introduced a package-delivering'bot that uses LiDAR to navigate around. The package locker it carries uses facial recognition to ensure it's got the right recipient before popping open its doors. The G Plus, as it's called, is being developed with Chinese company RoboSense. The robotics outfit lends its LiDar technology to the robot, which uses it for the same purpose as self-driving cars: To create a 3D map of its surroundings and avoid obstacles.


Singapore invites China to test artificial intelligence solutions

NANJING: China has been invited to test its artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in Singapore and work together to help the region tackle everyday problems in areas such as healthcare and banking. Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat made this invitation at the first Sino-Singapore Artificial Intelligence Forum in Nanjing on Friday (Jun 1), which was attended by about 350 AI experts from both countries. During his speech, which was partly delivered in Chinese, Mr Heng said that there was big potential for both countries to develop AI. "For example, the Monetary Authority of Singapore has a financial technology (Fintech) sandbox for companies to develop new financial solutions before launching them in the market," said Mr Heng, who is also in China for a series of meetings. Sandboxes are platforms that allow software to be securely tested in an environment where legal and regulatory requirements are relaxed. The Land Transport Authority is also testing driverless vehicle systems in such sandboxes in Singapore, Mr Heng said.
