Many of us grew up watching the incredible potential of robots in movies and television. Robots showed us the brightest of the future. However, we haven't really seen the true potential of robotic technology being unleashed. While the popular TV cartoon show, Jetsons from the 60's showed us the infinite possibilities of humans and robots co-existing, movies like the Terminator or Wall-E scared us by showing the prospective dark side of Artificial Intelligence and technology. But the age where robots finally coexist with human beings is not really far.

China's grand designs to dominate the future of clean energy paid off spectacularly this week. In a public offering on June 11 in Shenzhen, battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL) raised nearly $1 billion to fund ambitious expansion plans, and its stock has been shooting up every day since. Thanks largely to the company's new plants, China will be making 70 percent of the world's electric-vehicle batteries by 2021, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). The rapid rise of CATL is arguably the clearest, though certainly not the only, payoff from China's calculated efforts to bolster its domestic battery and electric-vehicle industries--two of the most promising sectors in clean energy. These efforts have largely followed the same playbook China used to get ahead in solar panels, including highly automated manufacturing; aggressive efforts to lock in global supply chains; foreign acquisitions and licensing; and hefty doses of government support and protectionism.

The US dollar had an event-heavy week to start off June. The US dollar surged early last week as the uncertainty about the Euro arose due to political events happened in Europe and the volatility in Asian markets driven by threats of an immediate trade war between the US and China. On Thursday (May 31), the Euro rebounded as Italy's politicians seemed to have found a resolution to their struggles in forming a new government. In the same day, the Trump administration announced it was putting tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and Europe, strengthening fears over the trade war and making the US dollar suffer a slump. The US labor indicators highlighted the fundamental strength of the country's economy and made the US dollar extend gains amid the Europe geopolitical turmoil.

Researchers have built an AI-powered camera with the power to'see' through walls. The system uses radio frequencies to sense movement, allowing it to'watch' people walk, jump and sit – even when they are obscured from view. While the camera could allow anyone to spy on you, researchers are hoping it will prove useful in healthcare applications. It could, for instance, be used in care homes to monitor if someone has taken a fall behind closed doors. MIT researchers have developed AI that can see through walls (pictured).

Last month, a passenger using Didi Chuxing's carpooling service Hitch was allegedly killed by a driver using his father's account. Since then, the company has been rolling out new safety measures for its ridesharing platforms including updates to its emergency help feature and making driver facial recognition verification mandatory for each Hitch trip. Didi also stopped allowing Hitch trips between the hours of 10PM and 6AM as it considered additional measures. Now, Reuters reports, the company is extending its hours but will only allow late-night and early-morning rides between drivers and passengers of the same sex. The hours of operation will now be from 5AM to 12AM, but from 5AM to 6AM and 10PM to 12AM, drivers can only pick up passengers of their own sex.

In the past few decades, sci-fi films have elevated the awareness of intelligent machines among mass audiences. Last year, Google's AlphaGo program beat a team comprising five of the best human Go players in the world. With Go being one of the most abstract strategy board games ever designed for humans, AI's ability to win placed the overarching technology's growing capabilities firmly under the spotlight. The rise of the machines – and what that means for humans – has been a hot topic. These machines, commonly depicted as sentient robots trying to overthrow humans, have in fact been highly misrepresented.

Tech giants are pouring money into artificial intelligence. Baidu and Google spent between $20 and $30 billion on AI in 2016 alone, according to research from McKinsey. In Google's case, a portion of that investment went to AI centers in China and France, and the Mountain View company shows no signs of slowing down. Today, Google announced its next AI research center will be in Accra, Ghana. "In recent years, we've … witnessed an increasing interest in machine learning research across the continent," senior Google AI fellow Jeff Dean and staff research scientist Moustapha Cisse wrote in a blog post.

A 31-year-old AI engineer has married one of his robot creations. Zheng Jiajia, who used to work for Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, held an informal wedding ceremony for himself and his robot wife in Hangzhou, local papers report. NEW DELHI: Tech giant IBM has unveiled a new line of power system servers that can handle intensive computing workloads at organisations using new-age technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). "The next-generation power systems servers incorporate a newly designed POWER9 processor. This has been built specifically for compute-intensive AI workloads... Using this, enterprises can over a period of time build more accurate AI applications, faster," Satya Sharma, IBM Fellow and Cognitive Systems CTO ( IBM Systems), said. He added that data scientists can build applications faster, ranging from deep learning insights in scientific research, real-time fraud detection and credit risk analysis. IBM Director (Systems) India/South Asia Viswanath Ramaswamy said over the next 2-5 years, AI will become embedded in enterprises across sectors retail and financial services.
