Artificial Intelligence has reached era of consumerisation, says Infy co-founder

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan today said Artificial Intelligence has reached the era of consumerisation and opined that it might be disruptive in the coming years. "What we are witnessing right now is the consumerisation of AI. Consumerisation has two aspects, one is cost and second is access. And I believe that we are at the beginning of the consumerisation of AI," he said. Gopalakrishnan, who is chairman of CII India Innovation Summit, opined that AI may be disruptive in the coming years.


Artificial Intelligence can accurately predict distribution of radioactive fallout

Scientists have created an artificial intelligence (AI) based computer programme that can accurately predict where emitted radioactive material will eventually land, over 30 hours in advance. "Our new tool was first trained using years of weather-related data to predict where radioactivity would be distributed if it were released from a particular point," said Takao Yoshikane from The University of Tokyo in Japan. "In subsequent testing, it could predict the direction of dispersion with at least 85 per cent accuracy, with this rising to 95 per cent in winter when there are more predictable weather patterns," said Yoshikane.When a nuclear power plant accident occurs and radioactive material is released, it is vital to evacuate people in the vicinity as quickly as possible, according to the research published in the journal Scientific Reports. However, it can be difficult to immediately predict where the emitted radioactivity will settle, making it impossible to prevent the exposure of large numbers of people, the researchers said. Using weather forecasts on the expected wind patterns, the tool enables evacuation plans and other health-protective measures to be implemented if another nuclear accident like in 2011 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant were to occur. The team created a system based on a form of artificial intelligence called machine learning, which can use data on previous weather patterns to predict the route that radioactive emissions are likely to take.


SBI Card launches artificial intelligence powered virtual assistant electronic live assistant

NEW DELHI: SBI Card, the country's second largest credit card issuer, today announced the launch of'ELA' (Electronic Live Assistant), a virtual assistant for customer support and services. Driven by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, ELA is designed to enhance customer experience by providing relevant and instant responses to customer queries, SBI Card said in a statement. Customers can communicate with ELA in conversational language, enabling easy interface along with prompt query resolution, SBI Card managing director Hardayal Prasad said. The virtual assistant is currently hosted on the SBI Card website and will soon be integrated on the mobile app as well, it said.


UNSW student designs system to improve IVF success rates

A final year medicine student at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has designed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that's helping women become pregnant using IVF techniques. UNSW said on Wednesday that Aengus Tran, 24, and his MBA- accredited brother Dimitry have founded Harrrison-AI, an organisation that uses machine learning technology to improve the embryo selection process. The men were driven to start the company following a lecture from IVF Australia's scientific director, Dr Simon Cooke, who said that embryologists manually assess groups of embryos based on physical appearance at a limited number of critical development checkpoints. This is before they select the embryo they feel is most likely to result in a pregnancy, UNSW said. Tran has created a system called'Ivy' that uses machine learning from thousands of previous successful and unsuccessful embryos to help make decisions about viability faster and better.

PGA Tour is embracing artificial intelligence, and it could change how you watch golf

The UK's revenge porn helpline is set to close next month, according to Labour MP Sarah Champion. The helpline, which launched in February 2015, offers support to men and women affected by revenge porn, where explicit images or videos of them have been shared without their consent. 'China's Google' releases its first AI chip

Baidu unveiled an artificial intelligence chip called Kunlun during its annual Baidu Create event on Tuesday. The company joins a raft of other Chinese firms in designing hardware tailored for machine-learning. Seven years: Kunlun is optimized for various AI tasks including voice recognition, natural language processing, image recognition, and autonomous driving. Baidu first started making customized AI processors using FPGAs (a kind of chip that can be reconfigured on the fly) in 2011. The new design is 30 times faster than the original FPGA-based processor, but the company says it's not ready to begin mass producing it yet.
