This weekend, SpaceX began what is slated to be its busiest week ever by successfully launching its largest payload to date: a communications satellite dubbed TelStar 19V. Perched atop the company's Cape Canaveral launch pad, a shiny new Falcon 9 rocket roared to life at 1:50 am Eastern on Sunday morning, lighting up the predawn sky. It was the 13th launch so far this year for SpaceX--and, notably, the first of three Falcon 9 Block 5 booster launches scheduled for the next 12 days. SpaceX equipped the Block 5 booster--known internally as B1047--with several upgrades designed to make it more capable than its predecessor, the Block 4. They include improved engines, a more durable interstage, titanium grid fins, and a new thermal protection system. Together they help the rocket pack a bigger punch, more safely, more often: On Sunday, the Block 5 not only delivered its hefty payload to orbit, it also landed aboard an autonomous drone ship waiting out in the Atlantic.

Marriott International, the world's largest hotel chain, announced earlier this month a rollout of facial recognition software for check-ins in partnership with Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group. The new kiosks at two Marriott locations in China will be able to scan and identify guests' faces, pull up their reservations, and check them in--all without the help of humans.

Fortnite is celebrating its first anniversary with a special set of Birthday Challenges for players of the popular game, which include dancing in front of cake. There are 10 different cakes to dance in front of, each one placed in a different location on the map. Fortnite players have been sharing where to find them on Twitter and Reddit, as well as through YouTube explainer videos. The beginning of Fornite's birthday was marked with down time, as the popular Battle Royale game deployed the v5.10 update. Scheduled for 9am BST, the update was scheduled to minimise disruption for Fortnite's more-than 125 million players around the world.

Israeli computer vision startup, Trigo Vision, has won $7 million in a seed funding round by UK-Israel based Hetz Ventures and Vertex Ventures Israel. Trigo Vision's vision platform is designed for the retail market. It combines a network of ceiling-based cameras with machine vision algorithms to identify customers' shopping items, similar in principle to the Amazon Go store in Seattle, which doesn't have a checkout because it can track what customers put in their shopping basket. The funding will be used to grow the company's core R&D team and build new applications for its technology. 'The founding team has managed to assemble a world-class R&D team to tackle an enormous user experience problem in retail,' commented Yanai Oron, general partner at Vertex Ventures.

Now Boston Dynamics's awkward, four-legged, dog-like robot, SpotMini, is evolving from a viral YouTube sensation to a purchasable pet of sorts, according to the company's founder, Marc Raibert. Raibert told an audience last month at the CeBIT computer expo in Hanover, Germany, that his company is already testing SpotMini with potential customers from four separate industries: security, delivery, construction and home assistance. His presentation at the expo was reported by Inverse.

For many, HAL Laboratory is just the studio behind the Kirby games but there's more to this company than first appears. I was lucky enough to catch up with the studio's president Satoshi Mitsuhara and find out what makes HAL Laboratory so special. Mitsuhara has had a long and eventful career in gaming but how he got into games is very interesting. Especially as he started out as a programmer but not out of mathematical interesting, but something more mechanical. "I grew up in Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture. It was the countryside so you could say I grew up surrounded by nature. In those days, the source of information in areas like this was just TV and radio. That meant whatever was happening in more cosmopolitan areas, I was a long way from that covered in mud. "I used to really enjoy playing with radio-controlled cars when I was younger, so I think that lead up to working with computers in a way.

BENGALURU: Building on a foundation of excellence and affordability, Reliance Jio is seeing a rapid convergence of physical, distributional and geographical growth, said Akash Ambani, chief strategy officer, Reliance Jio Infocomm, at the third-annual conference of IIM Bangalore alumni on Friday. Ambani said the company has been a disruptor in the telecom space. "It is my firm belief that in the next two or three decades, we as a civilisation will achieve more than what it has achieved in the last 100 years," said Ambani. Ambani said we are in the age of super intelligence - machine intelligence, artificial intelligence. "Many say that machine learning is evil as it will replace humans. In my opinion, machines can prove highly beneficial. We will not be seeking to replace human effort; but to amplify it with intelligence," he said.
