Can sound help save a dwindling elephant population? Scientists using AI think so. - Asia News Center

Deep in the rainforest in a northern corner of the Republic of Congo, some of the most sophisticated monitoring of animal sounds on earth is taking place. Acoustic sensors are collecting large amounts of data around the clock for the Elephant Listening Project. These sensors capture the soundscape in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park and adjacent logging areas: chimpanzees, gorillas, forest buffalo, endangered African grey parrots, fruit hitting the ground, blood-sucking insects, chainsaws, engines, human voices, gunshots. But researchers and local land managers who placed them there are listening for one sound in particular -- the calls of elusive forest elephants. Forest elephants are in steep decline; scientists estimate two-thirds of Africa's population has likely been lost to ivory poaching in recent decades.

Artificial intelligence is the buzzword for 2018 and it is being used everywhere and often to describe fairly mundane automation and analytics-driven processes. One of the earliest adoptions has been speech to text, for example in call centres. AI enables the speech of both the call centre operator and the customer to be converted into text files and then an algorithm scans that text looking for keywords that may indicate an area of risk for the enterprise or sentiment analysis of the customer. "All AI today is narrow-focused, in other words, we have a system and we give it a specific challenge or task, a series of input data and a whole bunch of training data which is usually labelled or pre-classified," said Charles Sevior, CTO Unstructured Data Solutions, APJ and Greater China, Dell EMC, in an email interview with Networks Asia. "We are at the early stages of having computers accurately interpret unstructured data in a time so fast that it is considered to be "just like a human" – so-called AI."

For any language, syntax and structure usually go hand in hand, where a set of specific rules, conventions, and principles govern the way words are combined into phrases; phrases get combines into clauses; and clauses get combined into sentences. In the last few years, it has felt like every big election has focused on jobs and the threats they (supposedly) face: from trade, from immigrants, and, most accurately, from technology. Until recently, the forecasts were almost unanimously grim: The robots were coming, we were told, and they'd soon make us humans redundant. In the summer of 2015, the Atlantic captured the panic with a cover story titled "A World Without Work," which warned that the moment when machines make workers obsolete "may finally be arriving." Then, on March 18 of this year, a self-driving car hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona -- and the conversation began to shift. Suddenly the fear that humans would soon be superfluous started to seem a little less likely.
