Hitachi to launch AI analysis of hospital leftovers to hasten inpatient recovery

A unit of Hitachi Ltd. will launch a new venture that uses artificial intelligence to analyze the leftovers of carefully planned hospital meals to ensure patients get the nutrients needed to better facilitate recovery, company officials said Monday. While AI is already being used to calculate calories and nutrients in meals from images taken before people eat, using AI to analyze leftovers from images is rare, according to officials at Hitachi Solutions Create Ltd., which is set to start the business by the end of March 2019. Hospitals prepare meals to accommodate each inpatient's medical needs, but if inpatients fail to eat them completely they may not recover from their illnesses or injuries as expected. To avoid a stalled recovery, the Tokyo-based firm plans to have AI learn what kinds of food or ingredient each patient tends to avoid and help hospitals come up with alternatives to make up for the missed nutrition. The company has already begun testing the system at a major hospital in Japan by taking images of leftovers on trays with cameras installed on trolleys.

Human features as objects of study have been widely used in various machine learning applications -- be it face detection, video surveillance or even the development of autonomous cars. Google Trusts DeepMind AI To Manage Data Centre Cooling

US search engine giant Google announced that it has decided to double its investment in Taiwan to $600 million while opening its first data centre in Asia cashing in on the robust demands. Google is trusting an artificial intelligence (AI) system developed by DeepMind to stop its data centres around the world from overheating. The AI system -- able to reduce the amount of energy Google used to cool its data centres by 40% -- has been giving cooling recommendations to Google's data centre operators since 2016. But now Google is allowing the data centre operators to take a back seat, giving the AI an unprecedented level of autonomy in the process.


UAE-based retail CEOs eye AI to give them edge

Almost half of UAE-based CEOs in the retail industry intend to start using artificial intelligence (AI) in the next two years to enhance the store experience for customers. This is according to the 2018 Global Consumer Executive Top of Mind survey, jointly conducted by KPMG International and The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF). Global CEOs, however, were less optimistic about the adoption of AI, with only 24 percent expressing intent to start using AI over the next few years. They were also less confident about the prospects of technology in retail, with 48 percent saying that brands would use technology to enhance the retail store experience. This is in stark contrast with UAE CEOs, who were confident of harnessing technology to transform the customer experience in-store.

Weak AI: which is focused on building systems that can behave like humans, but the results will tell nothing about how humans think - IBM Deep Blue Chess programme is one such example.


Japan preparing to accept more caregivers from Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam

Japan plans to accept more caregivers from three Southeast Asian countries that have free trade agreements with Tokyo to help address the national labor shortage, sources familiar with the matter said. By easing some restrictions on caregivers from Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, the government will allow more of those with strong proficiency in Japanese to work in Japan starting next April, the sources said Sunday. Under current terms, Japan accepts up to 300 caregivers from each country per year. The government aims to treat those with high language proficiency separately from those groups. The number who want to be caregivers in Japan has been increasing.

Voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri have become increasingly popular in recent years, but now one Japanese company has taken things one step further by transitioning from a purely voice-based system to one that you can practically have a relationship with. Originally only available in a limited capacity to customers who placed a pre-order, the Gatebox virtual assistant appears as a holographic anime girl named Hikari Azuma. In addition to responding to voice commands, Azuma is capable of recognizing her owner's face, controlling various'smart' devices around the home and can even send text messages.


Intel India trains 99,000 people in artificial intelligence

US chipmaker Intel has trained as many as 99,000 developers, students and professors in artificial intelligence (AI) in India since April 2017, against a target of 15,000 for the first year of its programme, according to the tech major. It has also tied up with premier educational institutes like the IITs in Delhi, Mumbai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Chennai, and IIITs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, BITS Pilani, ISI Kolkata, IISc Bangalore, CDAC and companies like Shell and TCS among others for training under its AI developer education. "Though we had committed to train 15,000 developers, students, and professors in AI initially through training and workshops, we have already exceeded the target over seven-fold at over 99,000 by roping in many of them from 100 organisations," said Prakash Mallya, managing director for sales and marketing, Intel India. The programme was launched in April 2017 and the initial target was for a year ending April 2018, he said, adding the programme is aimed to democratising AI through collaborations with partners and customers. The company, which organised its first AI developer conference in the country last week in Bengaluru after the initiative in home market US earlier this year, had over 500 developers attending it.
