Researchers Hope Artificial Intelligence Can Save Our World's Dying Reefs

The alleged effects of climate change are reportedly responsible for coral reef bleaching, which is having catastrophic impacts on local marine species. Hoping to reverse this supposed trend, a new method of artificial intelligence (AI) cataloguing designed to identify the geographic regions where coral still thrives, aims to save some of the world's densest and varies aquatic ecosystems. Between ethical and economic concerns, there are plenty of reasons why saving our world's coral reef systems are in our best interest. Aside from providing habitat to a quarter of marine species, reefs generate $375 billion (USD) in revenue to the world economy, along with food security to over 500 million people. Without our ocean's reefs, researchers believe countless species and an entire ocean fishing industry would cease to exist.


Seeking a new element in artificial intelligence: trust

BROOKLYN, New York, Tuesday, August 21, 2018 - For decades, the cybersecurity community has devised protections to fend off malicious software attacks and identify and fix flaws that can disrupt the computing programs that are central to all aspects of life. Now, a team of researchers from New York University Tandon School of Engineering and Columbia University has received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop some of the first tools to bring those same protections to artificial intelligence (AI) systems. "There are ways to test and debug computer software before you deploy it and methods of verifying that your software works as you expect it to," said Siddharth Garg, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NYU Tandon. "There's nothing analogous for AI systems, and we're developing a tool suite that will lead to safer, more secure deployment of the systems used in autonomous driving, medical imaging, and other applications," he said. In addition to Garg, the research team includes NYU Tandon assistant professors Anna Choromanska, in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Brendan Dolan-Gavitt, in the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and Suman Jana, an assistant professor of computer science at Columbia University School of Engineering.

My spine still shivers when I remember the nuclear stand-off between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1962. As a nine-year-old I felt helpless in the face of two leaders poised to push the button. It was MAD – mutually assured destruction – but sanity prevailed and by the end of the 1960s we had détente. In the decades since I have felt comfortable with the dazzling march of technology that has reduced global poverty, given us longer lives, delivered the information superhighway and created my zero-emissions Tesla. Yes, there are disappointments – the internet, for example, has not raised the calibre of conversation but instead has created echo chambers of bigotry and forums for lies and harassment. But now for the first time since the 1960s something is tickling my worry beads: artificial intelligence.


Japan to increase support for firms developing caregiver robots

The government will step up support for companies developing caregiver robots with an eye on improving productivity in the field of elderly nursing care amid widespread labor shortages. In its budget request for fiscal 2019, which begins next April, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to request that funds for such support be increased by about 20 percent from the previous year's ¥1.1 billion, informed sources said. The use of robots for providing help going to the toilet, walking and other assistance is expected to alleviate the physical burdens of care workers considerably and contribute to an easing of labor shortages in the industry. Furthermore, the ministry aims to help drastically reduce their work logging care recipients' health data, including blood pressure levels, by creating robots that automatically collect such data as they assist those in care. An administrative work assistance system that automatically stores such data so it is better used in care services is also envisioned. The system would have an artificial intelligence engine that analyzes recipients' behavioral patterns so that more effective care plans will be drawn up for them.

MUFG eyes artificial intelligence for loans to smaller businesses from spring of 2019 - The Mainichi

MUFG Bank Ltd. is set to begin extending loans to micro enterprises and small- and medium-sized businesses based on artificial intelligence (AI) as early as the spring of 2019 -- a move it hopes will make the loan process more efficient and attract new customers. Under the system, AI will evaluate businesses' creditworthiness based on their transaction histories to determine whether or not to extend loans to them. By completing procedures online the bank expects to be able to quickly extend loans at low cost while spurring new demand. Corporate clients who have main accounts at the bank will be eligible to apply. Under the system, the client first visits a special website and registers their account and other information, and sets the amount they want to borrow.

New Delhi: The workspace is changing drastically and very soon there will be just two types of people – employable in the augmented workplace and unemployable, a senior official at tech giant Oracle said. Besides, he said, there is a dichotomy emerging in today's workplace -- automation is taking up the repetitive jobs, which in turn means fewer jobs, while companies are struggling to get key talent for specialised jobs. On the other hand, tech experts maintain that though this trend is yet to take off in India, artificial intelligence has started featuring dominantly in HR (human resource) conversations and while terms like AI, chatbots and machine learning may sound intimidating, these technologies will not remove humans from the workplace. While automation will eliminate some jobs, it will also create some jobs that will support the "automation economy". "Employees nee-d to be more intuitive, irrespective of organisation fun-ction, more creative in the work they are doing," Sha-akun Khanna, head of HCM Applications, Asia Pacific, at Oracle told PTI. "The world will just have two types of people – employable in the augmented workplace and unemployable," he added.

DiDi unveils voice assistant, AR navigation programs - Xinhua

Chinese leading mobile transportation platform Didi Chuxing has unveiled a voice assistant and augmented reality (AR) slated for street testing in its latest efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the user experience. The interactive, app-based AR navigation service, which is built on computer vision positioning and 3D scene reconstruction technology, can help passengers navigate through large buildings, such as airports, train stations, and malls, to reach a vehicle pick-up location. The driver voice assistant, which is voice activated via an in-vehicle smart device, is designed to provide a full spectrum of services ranging from audio and video content search, information inquiry and temperature adjustment, to passenger communications, customer service, and even refuel, recharging or repair services. DiDi also launched its AI for Social Good project in conjunction with more than 10 founding partners to seek joint technological and social solutions to environmental, safety, health, and accessibility challenges. The company offers on-demand transportation services for about 550 million users, with daily rides reaching about 30 million.


Aberdeen Standard launches new global equity AI fund

The fund embeds machine learning techniques within the investment process and will use a variety of quantitative techniques to time its investments. The investments will be based on'factor premia' - those sources of risk such as value, quality, momentum, small size and low volatility that can provide investors with persistent risk-adjusted excess returns. The Aberdeen Global Artificial Intelligence Global Equity SICAV, launched in Luxembourg, is a collaboration between Aberdeen Standard Investments' Quantitative Investment Strategies team and Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Investment Technology Institute (MTEC)/Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation in Tokyo, Japan – a centre of excellence in robotics, artificial intelligence and financial technology.
