Elon Musk has reiterated his controversial belief we are living in a simulation. During his controversial appearance on comedian Joe Rogan's popular podcast, 'The Joe Rogan Experience,' where he smoked a joint, he also explained why he still believes we are living in the Matrix. He said that the sheer age of the universe - 13.8 billion years, means alien civilizations have had time to develop the complex systems needed. 'If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then games will be indistinguishable from reality, or civilization will end. One of those two things will occur,' Musk said.

Tesla shares have plunged this morning after Elon Musk smoked marijuana and drank whiskey while discussing everything from drugs to the possibility we're all living in a simulation, in a rambling two-and-a-half hour podcast appearance which was live-streamed on YouTube. The 47-year-old billionaire went on the Joe Rogan Experience late on Thursday night and accepted a joint from the host - after a rambling conversation that also took in the dangers of AI and the possibility China is spying on US citizens through their phones. Hours later, the company's chief accounting officer Dave Morton resigned citing'public attention' on the company. Meanwhile, shares plummeted to nine per cent this morning, wiping $4.3 billion off the company's value. By close of trading they had slightly recovered to a 6.3 per cent drop, reducing the company's value by $3.1bn. It follows weeks of serious turbulence for both Musk and Tesla, after he falsely announced he was taking the company private in a deal with Saudi Arabia and accused a British hero diver of being a paedophile.

Professor of electrical and computer engineering Subhash Kak from Oklahoma University believes robots could become mass murderers if they are not wired correctly. Although the danger does not exist with the current technology, Dr Kak believes future technical malfunctions could put thousands of peoples' lives at risk. Earlier this year he issued another chilling warning saying that the machine takeover will lead mankind into a'hellish dystopia'. This is the very thing that's taken away when they are placed in a museum, where they can be seen and read about – but not played. Places like Berlin's Computerspielemuseum and exhibitions like the Barbican's Game On have focused on video games' history as a technology: arcade cabinets and old computers give way to sleek-looking modern consoles, as the displayed works progress from lines and dots to pixel sprites to polygonal 3D models to realistic characters in beautifully-rendered worlds.

Defense Department pledges billions toward artificial intelligence research
The military's research arm said Friday it will invest up to $2 billion over the next five years toward new programs advancing artificial intelligence, stepping up both a technological arms race with China and an ideological clash with Silicon Valley over the future of powerful machines. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, part of the Defense Department, said it will fund dozens of new research efforts as part of a "Third Wave" campaign aimed at developing machines that can learn and adapt to changing environments. DARPA director Steven Walker announced the effort Friday to an audience from American academia, private industry and the military at a symposium outside Washington, saying the agency wants to explore "how machines can acquire human-like communication and reasoning capabilities." "This is a massive deal. It's the first indication that the United States is addressing advanced AI technology with the scale and funding and seriousness that the issue demands," said Gregory C. Allen, an adjunct fellow specializing in AI and robotics for the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank.

In August, not long after The Intercept revealed that Google has been working with the Chinese government to launch a censored search engine, workers at Google drafted a letter demanding that their bosses stop their plans and put in place a "concrete transparency and oversight process" to avoid being blindsided in the future by projects that conflict ethically with the employees working on them. To date, according to Buzzfeed, more than 1,400 people have signed the letter. The letter is the latest evidence that tech workers are interrogating their roles in changing the world. Before this, organized white-collar tech workers' biggest success occurred in June, when Google announced it wouldn't renew its contract for the Pentagon's Project Maven, which "involved drone video footage and low-res object identification using AI." To the more than 3,100 Google workers who signed an open letter, this contract would not only "irreparably damage Google's brand" but also pivot the company into "the business of war."

But the latest round-up is almost as useful: it gives an insight into the various surprising players who have failed to make the top ranking. A pioneering artificial intelligence has been used to spot dozens of mysterious signals coming from deep in space. The new AI spotted 72 previously undiscovered "fast radio bursts" emanating out of distant galaxies, according to Breakthrough Listen, a program searching for proof of life elsewhere in the universe. FRBs have long been thought to be one of the mysterious phenomena in the universe. They are intense blasts of radio emissions that can be detected on Earth and then switch off.
