Tiny soft robot with multilegs paves way for drugs delivery in human body

Around the world, there has been research about developing soft milli-robots. But the CityU's new design with multi-legs helps reduce friction significantly, so that the robot can move efficiently inside surfaces within the body lined with, or entirely immersed in, body fluids such as blood or mucus. The research findings have been published in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature Communications, titled "A Bio-inspired Multilegged Soft Millirobot that Functions in Both Dry and Wet Conditions." What makes this milli-robot stand out is its hundreds of less than 1 mm long pointed legs that looks like short tiny hair. This unique design was not a random choice.

Fortnite players will finally be able to play with friends on other consoles, after a major U-turn by Sony. The company said that it will finally be rolling out the cross-play feature, initially as a test, following intense anger from users. Players had long been crying out for such features, which are enabled on just about every other platform. But Sony said it would not allow them, and even appeared to suggest that it was doing so because PlayStation offered the best experience. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. A tiny robot with'caterpillar' legs could be used to carry drugs inside the human body. Researchers behind the technology say it has the equivalent strength of a human able to lift a 26-seat minibus. It can adapt to adverse environments and move efficiently along surfaces within the body lined with, or entirely immersed in, body fluids such as blood or mucus. But what makes the'milli-robot' stand out is its hundreds of less than one millimetre long pointed legs that look like tiny hairs. At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, students are immersing themselves in Chinese culture without setting foot outside their classroom. The Mandarin Project, a collaboration between RPI, located in upstate New York, and the tech giant IBM, places students in a virtual world where they can practice their Mandarin language skills in a series of simulated scenarios, such as ordering lunch in a restaurant or taking a tai chi class. The project aims to make students feel as if they are actually in China, without the inconvenience of traveling there, says Helen Zhou, assistant professor of communication and media at RPI, who has been actively involved in designing the project. In a high-tech "cognitive immersive room," a classroom with a 360-degree floor-to-ceiling screen, students can practice their Mandarin with artificial intelligence-powered animated characters (including a floating panda head). The CIR combines several emerging technologies -- natural language processing, speech-to-text and movement tracking -- to create a unique learning experience, said Zhou.

At 4ft-nothing, with orb-like eyes, SoftBank's humanoid robot, Pepper, is designed to look friendly. But imagine if Pepper -- a powerful machine crammed with cameras, sensors and motors -- hurtled towards you at top speed? Or stood in your home, secretly recording your life? In 2017, Lucas Apa and Cesar Cerrudo, security researchers with the consultancy IOActive, showed that the version 2.5.5 of Pepper could be hacked through its software because of vulnerabilities that were discovered when it was connected to a network. They demonstrated that the robot could be controlled remotely, its limbs manipulated and its cameras used to spy on users. Yet more than a year later, SoftBank has not patched the software, according to an analysis of its change logs by Mr Apa.

After nearly two decades of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Marine Corps is looking to reorient toward its specialty, amphibious operations, while preparing for the next fight against what is likely to a more capable foe. Peer and near-peer adversaries are deploying increasingly sophisticated weaponry that the Corps believes will make amphibious landings a much more challenging proposition in the future. The Corps is looking for high-tech weapons to counter those looming threats, but it's also looking for a sophisticated system to counter a persistent, low-tech, but decidedly dangerous weapon -- mines hidden close to shore. According to a recent post on the US government's Federal Business Opportunities website, first spotted by Marine Corps Times, the Marine Corps Rapid Capability Office is looking to autonomous and artificial-intelligence technology to "increase Marines' ability to detect, analyze, and neutralize Explosive Ordnance (EO) in shallow water and the surf zone" -- two areas where amphibious ships and landing craft would spend much of their time. "Initial market research has determined multiple technically mature solutions exist that can assist Marines ability to achieve this capability," the notice says.
