Dyson Airwrap: Vacuum company reveals new tool that uses super-fast motor to style your hair

Dyson has released a hair styling tool that uses the efficient speed of its vacuum motors to change your look. The company โ€“ better known for its vacuums, and with all eyes on a car it is making โ€“ has made its second move into the beauty industry, following the success of the ยฃ300 Supersonic hair dryer. The Dyson Airwrap costs ยฃ400 and is on sale now. It uses the motor that powers its vacuums to create jets of air that can then be used to style hair into curls, waves and smooth blow dries without the need for extreme heat. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.


Google's Pixel 3 smartphone, complete with AI-powered camera, to debut in Japan in November

TOKYO/NEW YORK โ€“ Google LLC said Wednesday its Pixel 3 smartphone series with artificial intelligence-powered cameras will hit shelves in Japan in November, the first time the American tech giant has released its signature phones in the country. The move into Japan pits Google against Apple Inc.'s iPhones, which make up half of the country's market share The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, with screen sizes of 5.5 inches and 6.3 inches, respectively, feature high-tech cameras and allow its users to screen calls using AI. "It's designed from inside out to be the smartest, most helpful device," said Nanda Ramachandran, senior director at Google Pixel Business, at a news event in Tokyo. "They come at the intersection of AI, hardware and software working together." Google began receiving orders for the Pixel 3 series through its website Wednesday, while mobile phone carriers SoftBank Corp. and NTT Docomo Inc. will start taking preorders on Oct. 19 for the phones.


Microsoft investing in Grab to collaborate on AI, big data and tech projects

MICROSOFT Corp is investing in South-east Asian ride-hailing firm Grab as part of a partnership that the two companies said will allow them to collaborate on technology projects, including big data and artificial intelligence. The companies did not disclose the deal value. Grab had earlier said it planned to raise roughly US$3 billion by year-end, of which it has already raised US$2 billion. Last week, Reuters reported that existing backer SoftBank Group Corp was closing in on a deal to invest about US$500 million in Grab as part of the funding round. Sources said that Grab is likely to tap strategic and financial firms for the remainder of the funding.


Microsoft to Invest in Southeast Asian Ride-Hailing Firm Grab

Before Tuesday's deal, it raised $2 billion in 2018, led by Toyota Motor Corp and financial firms, including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital. Singapore-headquartered Grab has taken its ride-hailing business to 235 cities in eight countries in Southeast Asia in the past six years. It is looking to transform itself into a leading consumer technology group, offering services such as food and parcel deliveries, electronic money transfers, micro-loans and mobile payments, besides ride-hailing. Grab will work with Microsoft to explore mobile facial recognition, image recognition and computer vision technologies to improve the pick-up experience, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday. For example, passengers will be able to take a photo of their current location and have it translated into an actual address for the driver.

China's Tencent Partners with a UK Firm to Boost AI in Health Space

China's Tencent Holdings is tying up with a technology firm from the United Kingdom called Medopad Ltd to use artificial intelligence for the purpose of improving Parkinson's disease treatment. The company is collaborating with Medopad to develop a system to remotely monitor patients with severe movement disorder. The company said that the basic goal is to allow doctors to set drug doses and modify care without patients having to go to the hospital. Healthcare is increasingly "not only about what happens in the clinic, but what happens in the real world", Wei Fan, Tencent's executive director for medical AI research said. "The reason we want to work with Medopad is they're experts in monitoring patients."
