Huawei phone equipment in UK to be dismantled amid fears they could be used by China to spy on people

BT is removing Huawei technology from the phone networks amid fears that the Chinese government could be using its infrastructure to spy on citizens. The company says it will no longer use Huawei's equipment in its existing 3G and 4G networks, and that it would not use it to build the 5G ones that it is building at the moment. It is just the latest operator to announce that it would not use the Chinese companies equipment amid fears that phone messages they are relaying could be intercepted. New Zealand and Australia have stopped telecom operators using Huawei's equipment in new 5G networks because they are concerned about possible Chinese government involvement in their communications infrastructure. Huawei, the world's biggest network equipment maker ahead of Ericsson and Nokia, has said Beijing has no influence over its operations.


OnePlus to make first 5G phone in Europe with EE, company claims

OnePlus is going to make the first 5G phone available in Europe, the company has said. The decision could entirely change the way that phones work and will introduce a transformative technology to the UK, Andy Lau, OnePlus's chief executive and founder, told The Independent. The phone maker has teamed up with EE to make the handset available, aiming to have it ready for users in 2019. The two companies have signed a research and development partnership that will help deliver much faster and more reliable internet connections across the UK, they said. But the promise has been clouded by concerns about infrastructure and questions about when the technology required to make it work will arrive.


Waymo launches first US commercial self-driving taxi service

Almost ten years after Google secretly started work on technology that would allow a vehicle to operate without a human driver, the company has launched the nation's first commercial self-driving robo-taxi. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google, introduced a small fleet of ride-hailing vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona, asking people to pay, just as they would to travel by Uber or Lyft. For now, the project will also feature a human driver behind the wheel, just in case the robotic vehicle malfunctions. "Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public Self-driving technology is new to many, so we're proceeding carefully," Waymo's CEO John Krafcik, wrote in a blog post about Wednesday's run-out. He added: "Almost 10 years ago, we were founded as the Google self-driving car project to explore one simple question: how can we best use fully self-driving technology to make roads safer? We've been focused on building the world's most experienced driver ever since."

The film Robot and Frank imagined a near-future where robots could do almost everything humans could. The elderly title character was given a "robot butler" to help him continue living on his own. The robot was capable of everything from cooking and cleaning to socialising (and, it turned out, burglary). This kind of science fiction may turn out to be remarkably prescient. As growing numbers of elderly people require care, researchers believe that robots could be one way to address the overwhelming demand.


Active Learning Methods based on Statistical Leverage Scores

In many real-world machine learning applications, unlabeled data are abundant whereas class labels are expensive and scarce. An active learner aims to obtain a model of high accuracy with as few labeled instances as possible by effectively selecting useful examples for labeling. We propose a new selection criterion that is based on statistical leverage scores and present two novel active learning methods based on this criterion: ALEVS for querying single example at each iteration and DBALEVS for querying a batch of examples. To assess the representativeness of the examples in the pool, ALEVS and DBALEVS use the statistical leverage scores of the kernel matrices computed on the examples of each class. Additionally, DBALEVS selects a diverse a set of examples that are highly representative but are dissimilar to already labeled examples through maximizing a submodular set function defined with the statistical leverage scores and the kernel matrix computed on the pool of the examples. The submodularity property of the set scoring function let us identify batches with a constant factor approximate to the optimal batch in an efficient manner. Our experiments on diverse datasets show that querying based on leverage scores is a powerful strategy for active learning.


On stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics with dependent data streams in the logconcave case

Stochastic Gradient Langevin Dynamics (SGLD) is a combination of a Robbins-Monro type algorithm with Langevin dynamics in order to perform data-driven stochastic optimization. In this paper, the SGLD method with fixed step size $\lambda$ is considered in order to sample from a logconcave target distribution $\pi$, known up to a normalisation factor. We assume that unbiased estimates of the gradient from possibly dependent observations are available. It is shown that, for all $\varepsilon>0$, the Wasserstein-$2$ distance of the $n$th iterate of the SGLD algorithm from $\pi$ is dominated by $c_1(\varepsilon)[\lambda^{1/2 - \varepsilon}+e^{-a\lambda n}]$ with appropriate constants $c_1(\varepsilon), a>0$.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the size, breadth, and granularity of data in biology and medicine has grown rapidly. In the example of neuroscience, studies with thousands of subjects are becoming more common, which provide extensive phenotyping on the behavioral, neural, and genomic level with hundreds of variables. The complexity of such big data repositories offer new opportunities and pose new challenges to investigate brain, cognition, and disease. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a prototypical family of methods for wrestling with and harvesting insight from such rich datasets. This doubly-multivariate tool can simultaneously consider two variable sets from different modalities to uncover essential hidden associations. Our primer discusses the rationale, promises, and pitfalls of CCA in biomedicine.


EEG Classification based on Image Configuration in Social Anxiety Disorder

The problem of detecting the presence of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) using Electroencephalography (EEG) for classification has seen limited study and is addressed with a new approach that seeks to exploit the knowledge of EEG sensor spatial configuration. Two classification models, one which ignores the configuration (model 1) and one that exploits it with different interpolation methods (model 2), are studied. Performance of these two models is examined for analyzing 34 EEG data channels each consisting of five frequency bands and further decomposed with a filter bank. The data are collected from 64 subjects consisting of healthy controls and patients with SAD. Validity of our hypothesis that model 2 will significantly outperform model 1 is borne out in the results, with accuracy $6$--$7\%$ higher for model 2 for each machine learning algorithm we investigated. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) were found to provide much better performance than SVM and kNNs.
