On Distributed Multi-player Multiarmed Bandit Problems in Abruptly Changing Environment

Abstract-- We study the multi-player stochastic multiarmed bandit (MAB) problem in an abruptly changing environment. We consider a collision model in which a player receives reward at an arm if it is the only player to select the arm. We design two novel algorithms, namely, Round-Robin Sliding-Window Upper Confidence Bound# (RR-SW-UCB#), and the Sliding-Window Distributed Learning with Prioritization (SW-DLP). We rigorously analyze these algorithms and show that the expected cumulative group regret for these algorithms is upper bounded by sublinear functions of time, i.e., the time average of the regret asymptotically converges to zero. We complement our analytic results with numerical illustrations.


EasiCSDeep: A deep learning model for Cervical Spondylosis Identification using surface electromyography signal

Cervical spondylosis (CS) is a common chronic disease that affects up to two-thirds of the population and poses a serious burden on individuals and society. The early identification has significant value in improving cure rate and reducing costs. However, the pathology is complex, and the mild symptoms increase the difficulty of the diagnosis, especially in the early stage. Besides, the time-consuming and costliness of hospital medical service reduces the attention to the CS identification. Thus, a convenient, low-cost intelligent CS identification method is imperious demanded. In this paper, we present an intelligent method based on the deep learning to identify CS, using the surface electromyography (sEMG) signal. Faced with the complex, high dimensionality and weak usability of the sEMG signal, we proposed and developed a multi-channel EasiCSDeep algorithm based on the convolutional neural network, which consists of the feature extraction, spatial relationship representation and classification algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this EasiCSDeep is the first effort to employ the deep learning and the sEMG data to identify CS. Compared with previous state-of-the-art algorithm, our algorithm achieves a significant improvement.


Towards Understanding Language through Perception in Situated Human-Robot Interaction: From Word Grounding to Grammar Induction

Robots are widely collaborating with human users in diferent tasks that require high-level cognitive functions to make them able to discover the surrounding environment. A difcult challenge that we briefy highlight in this short paper is inferring the latent grammatical structure of language, which includes grounding parts of speech (e.g., verbs, nouns, adjectives, and prepositions) through visual perception, and induction of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) for phrases. This paves the way towards grounding phrases so as to make a robot able to understand human instructions appropriately during interaction. Grounding words through visual perception - using a probabilistic generative model - has the objective of making a robot able to understand the meaning of action verbs, object characteristics (i.e., color and geometry), and spatial relationships between objects in space through a cross situational learning context between a human tutor and a robot (without any previous knowledge of language). This implies inducing unsupervised Part-of-Speech (POS) tags representing syntactic categories of words and grounding them, with the meaning of words, through visual perceptual information (Figures 1 & 2).


Congress grills Google CEO over Chinese search engine plans

If you were hoping that Google chief Sundar Pichai would shed more light on his company's potential censored search engine for China... well, you'll mostly be disappointed. Rhode Island Representative David Cicilline grilled Pichai on the recently acknowledged Dragonfly project and mostly encountered attempts to downplay the significance of the engine. The Google exec stressed there were "no plans" to launch a search engine for China, and that Dragonfly was an "internal effort" and "limited" in scope. Pichai added that Google was "currently not in discussions" with Chinese officials. He also provided a non-committal answer when asked if Google would promise not to create a tool enabling Chinese surveillance.


Lawson tests fried chicken-dispensing robot in Tokyo

Major convenience store chain Lawson Inc. began experimenting Tuesday with a hot-and-ready food-dispensing robot that looks like its famous mascot, Karaage-kun, at an outlet in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo. Karaage refers to Japanese fried chicken. The robot, Dekitate (ready-to-eat) Karaage-kun Robo, can prepare food quickly as well as increase efficiency among workers. Depending on the results of the trial, it may be used to make other kinds of fried food as well, according to Lawson. The robot is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that allows it to fry food in just over a minute.

Apple ordered to stop selling iPhones in China, chip company Qualcomm claims

Apple has been banned by a court from selling iPhones in China, according to chip maker Qualcomm. The company says that a Chinese court has granted two preliminary injunctions that will force Apple to stop selling a whole range of iPhones released since the iPhone 6s. That accounts for just about every phone Apple has made in the last three years: the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Qualcomm said that the ruling required Apple to stop importing and selling the phones. "We deeply value our relationships with customers, rarely resorting to the courts for assistance, but we also have an abiding belief in the need to protect intellectual property rights," said Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm's general counsel. "Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us. These Court orders are further confirmation of the strength of Qualcomm's vast patent portfolio."


'Unpredictable' killer robots could go 'off the rails'

Introducing self-governing killer robots to the battlefield could have horrific consequences for mankind, a leading academic has warned. The lethal technology is being developed around the world and is slowly being used in warfare as countries try to stay ahead of other nations. A global initiative to prohibit the use of fully autonomous killing machines that do not require any human oversight to choose and execute people was blocked earlier this year. A handful of countries including Australia, Israel, the US, Russia and South Korea prevented the worldwide ban - citing the need for further talks on the'benefits and advantages of autonomous weapons'. Richard Moyes, an honorary fellow at the University of Exeter and founding member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots (CSKR), has revealed the long-term use of killer robots, without human controllers, may result in unnecessary loss of life to both civilians and soldiers.

A mind-reading device known as an electroencephalogram (EEG) can be fitted to a person's scalp to track electrical signals produced by the brain. Some companies have started forcing workers to wear them and combining the readings with artificial intelligence to dissect their thoughts. Nita Farahany, a professor of law and philosophy at Duke University, gave a TedTalk on the topic and revealed she was concerned that this may cost people their jobs. The headsets are already being used to track alertness, productivity and mental states in China.
