Army Looking at AI-Controlled Weapons to Counter Enemy Fire

The head of U.S. Army acquisitions said Thursday that allowing artificial intelligence to control some weapons systems may be the only way to defeat enemy weapons. U.S. military has embraced AI, arguing that America cannot compete against potential adversaries such as Russia and China without the futuristic technology. Concern over placing machines in charge of deadly weapons has prompted military officials to adopt a conservative approach to AI, one that involves a human in the decision-making process for the use of deadly force. But Bruce Jette, assistant secretary of the Army for Acquisitions, Logistics and Technology (ASAALT), said it may not be wise to put too many restrictions on AI teamed with weapons systems. "People worry about whether an AI system is controlling the weapon, and there are some constraints on what we are allowed to do with AI," he said at a Jan. 10 Defense Writers Group breakfast in Washington, D.C.


UK-Japan partnership to see collaboration on incurable diseases, green technology and AI

A new partnership between the UK and Japan will see medical researchers and scientists join forces, in advancing research into chronic conditions - such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis - green technology and AI. The collaboration, announced by British Prime Minister Theresa May, Business Secretary Greg Clark and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will see ยฃ30 million invested into a new partnership aimed at promoting technology and innovation in both Britain and Japan. The partnership includes a ยฃ10 million programme led by the UK's Medical Research Council (MRC) and Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) that will advance regenerative medicine. Greg Clark commented: "The UK and Japan are home to some of the most innovative businesses in the world, and we share the same fundamental belief in the power of enterprise to improve the lives of our citizens. This government wants to give older people at least five extra healthy independent years of life by 2035."

IIT KGP to launch 6-month Artificial Intelligence course - Times of India

KOLKATA: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur will launch a six-month Artificial Intelligence (AI) course at three centres in the country, a top official of the institute said Thursday. IIT-KGP, Director, Partha Pratim Chakrabarti told a press meet here that the certified programme is aimed at strengthening India's talent pool in Machine Learning and AI. Chakrabarti said the courses, which will begin from March this year will be offered at IIT KGP's Kolkata facility, at IIT KGP's Kharagpur campus and at a rented premise at Bengaluru. He said thousands of new jobs were being created in AI sector every year with AI growing at 10-15 per cent on annual rate and there was need to have more skilled people in the AI sector. "AI is the future which will more invade our lives in the coming days," Chakrabarti said.


Former Google exec: AI will replace 40 percent of jobs in 15 years

But in his most recent book, "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order," Lee argues that AI displacement will be fundamentally different. In a November interview with Futurism, Lee explained that AI will allow entire new industries to be built from the ground up with automation in mind -- not only will AI prove cheaper than human employees, but many of the new jobs it creates will be automated as well. Lee told CBS that this wave of automation and worker displacement will happen much more quickly than others, such as the invention and distribution of the steam engine. Part of that is because AI algorithms can be shared around the world among developers and business leaders with little need for new infrastructure. No railroads or highways or power grids need to be built.


E-governance services can be improved through artificial intelligence: Prasad

New Delhi: Artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning can prove to be very helpful in detecting duplication under various e-governance services which will help the government save a lot of money, minister of electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday while inaugurating the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence set up by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). This centre will work closely with various ministries and government departments to promote innovation in application of AI to take e-governance services to the next level, he said. The prime minister has been repeatedly conveying to us that all the ministers and the government must use new dimensions of AI in the course of governance, Prasad added. Over the last two years, the government has been actively promoting the use of AI. Last year, the IT ministry had set up four committees to encourage research related to AI headed by directors of Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Nasscom and eminent researchers to develop citizen-centric use cases.

Venture capitalist: AI will displace 40 percent of world's jobs in as soon as 15 years

In as soon as 15 years, 40 percent of the world's jobs could be done by machines, according to one of the world's foremost experts on artificial intelligence. Kai Fu Lee, a pioneer in AI and venture capitalist based in China makes this prediction in a Scott Pelley report about AI on the next edition of 60 Minutes, Sunday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m., ET/PT on CBS. "AI will increasingly replace repetitive jobs, not just for blue-collar work, but a lot of white-collar work," says Lee. "Chauffeurs, truck drivers, anyone who does driving for a living-- their jobs will be disrupted more in the 15-25 year time frame," he tells Pelley. "Many jobs that seem a little bit complex, chef, waiter, a lot of things will become automated ... stores ... restaurants, and altogether in 15 years, that's going to displace about 40 percent of the jobs in the world." When pressed by Pelley about 40 percent of jobs being displaced, Lee says the jobs will be, "displaceable."
