China regulator requests pause in new video game applications to clear backlog
BEIJING/SHANGHAI - China's top content regulator has asked local authorities to stop submitting requests to monetize new video games while it processes a backlog of applications built up after a lengthy pause last year, three people with knowledge of the matter have said. The General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) issued the notice this week, the people said, indicating the impact on gaming stocks of the nine-month hiatus could continue and dulling hopes raised by the recent resumption of approvals. The regulator's notice has not previously been reported. China stopped approving the monetization of new titles last March amid a regulatory body reshuffle triggered by growing criticism of games being violent and addictive, as well as concern over the increase in myopia among young people. Gaming firms such as Tencent -- China's most valuable listed company -- were able to continue filing applications, building up a backlog.

High on enthusiasm, low on details, its goal is to ramp up the rate of progress in AI research so the United States won't get outpaced by countries like China. Experts had been warning for months that under Trump, the US hasn't been doing enough to maintain its competitive edge. Now, it seems, Trump has finally got the memo. His executive order, signed February 11, promises to "drive technological breakthroughs ... in order to promote scientific discovery, economic competitiveness, and national security."
Machine learning can locate wrist fractures in radiographs
AI algorithms can quickly detect and localize wrist fractures in X-ray images, which can augment the work of harried emergency physicians and radiologists. Missing a fracture on an emergency department radiograph is one of the most common causes of diagnostic errors and subsequent litigation. Such errors are due to clinical inexperience, distraction, fatigue, poor viewing conditions and time pressures. The study authors, from the National University of Singapore, hypothesized that automated analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) would be "invaluable" in reducing these misreadings and that an object detection convolutional neural network (CNN) would work better than other CNNs. Object detection CNNs are extensions of image classification models that not only recognize and classify objects on images, but also localize the position of each object.

The world's first humanless warehouse is run only by robots and is a model for the future
At a recent technology show in Tokyo, a large robot arm reached into a full-sized mockup of a shipping container and began unloading boxes from it. Set on a platform that moved back and forth, the robot was doing a job usually carried out by warehouse workers and forklift operators. The goal of the company that's developing it, Mujin, is total automation. The system, still a prototype, doesn't work perfectly -- it accidentally damaged a box during the demo -- but it's going to be trialed in warehouses in Japan this year. "Lifting heavy boxes is probably the most backbreaking task in warehouse logistics," said Mujin's American co-founder and CTO, Rosen Diankov.
