Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming more advanced. One of the organisations working on AI is OpenAI; the not-for-profit artificial intelligence research organisation co-founded by Elon Musk. Last week, they produced a paper demonstrating the progress they have made on predictive text software. The AI that they developed, called GPT2, is so efficient in writing a text based on just a few lines of input, that OpenAI decided not to release the comprehensive research to the public. Already, GPT2 has been described as the text version of deep fakes.
Investment in UK artificial intelligence startups soars
Venture capital (VC) investment in the UK's growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector leapt almost six-fold from 2014 to 2018, with funding comprising almost as much as the rest of Europe combined. According to research prepared for Tech Nation and the Digital Economy Council by Dealroom, investment in UK AI startups reached US$ 1.3 billion in 2018. Notable deals in 2018 included Bristol-based Graphcore which raised US$200m. Throughout 2018, Dealroom recorded 82 venture capital fundraisings across UK companies, compared to 70 in the previous year-- that's a continuation of a trend that's seen investment in AI companies grow sharply over the last five years. "These statistics are further confirmation that the UK is Europe's undisputed number one tech hub," said the UK digital secretary, Jeremy Wright. "Our success in artificial intelligence is thanks to a unique combination of talent, location, our business friendly environment, unrivalled access to capital and world-leading universities."
Artificial Intelligence to nearly double innovation in Asia-Pacific by 2021 HRM Asia
Artificial Intelligence (AI) will nearly double the rate of innovation and employee productivity improvements in the Asia-Pacific by 2021 โ at any rate, for those organisations that have actually adopted it. This according to a new study from Microsoft and IDC Asia-Pacific, which surveyed more than 3,000 business leaders workers across 15 regional markets. However, despite clear benefits in adopting the technology, only 41% of organisations in Asia Pacific today have embarked on their AI journeys. For these organisations, the top three business drivers were: better customer engagement (26%), higher competitiveness (19%), and higher margins (18%). Business leaders who are adopting AI face three top challenges: a lack of thought leadership and leadership commitment to invest in AI; a lack of tools and infrastructure to develop actionable insights; and a lack of skills, resources and continuous learning programs.

Brain-inspired artificial intelligence in robots

Japan to ease language requirements for foreign nursing care trainees amid sluggish growth in applications
The central government plans to ease language requirements for foreign technical interns in the nursing care sector as part of its efforts to bring in more laborers from abroad, government sources have said. Japan opened up its nursing care sector to foreign nationals willing to work as trainees from November 2017. But the number of such trainees has seen sluggish growth apparently due to Japanese-language proficiency requirements, which have been set higher than those for interns in other sectors. Currently, care workers must have either reached the N4 level on the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test before entering the country or pass N3 a year after they arrive. Those who fail the N3 test have to return to their home country.

SK Hynix Plans to Spend $107 Billion Building Four Memory Chip Plants
South Korea's SK Hynix Inc on Thursday said it would spend $107 billion building four factories, as the memory chip maker seeks to maintain its competitiveness in the face of Chinese efforts to become a leading chipmaking nation. The chip fabrication plants will be built on a 4.5 million square meter site south of Seoul beginning 2022, complementing two existing domestic factories that will receive a separate 55 trillion won ($49 billion) investment over the next decade. The plans for the factories, producing DRAM and next-generation chips, come as chipmakers prepare for a surge in demand to power new technology such as fifth-generation (5G) communication networks and artificial intelligence, even as a slowdown in smartphone sales kills off a two-year chip boom. "Though there is not enough chip demand for autonomous cars now, I believe there will be much more demand for self-driving vehicles in the next 10 years or as early as in 2023 or 2024," said analyst Kim Young-gun at Mirae Asset Daewoo.
