This year, one of the panels will include talks about job design and the future of work and will offer a follow-up piece about their conclusions.

Popular video sharing app TikTok has received the largest ever fine from a US regulator for violating children's privacy, resulting in login issues for many of its users. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleged that the Musical.ly TikTok agreed to pay $5.7 million (£4.3m) on Wednesday to settle the case. As part of the settlement, TikTok's operators are required to remove any videos made by children under 13-years-old. Since the announcement of the settlement, some TikTok users reported being locked out of their accounts.

Fortnite Season 8 is finally here, bringing with it a whole range of new weapons, skins and challenges to the world's most popular video game. Patch notes for the latest edition of Fortnite revealed new areas of the game, with the biggest addition being a giant lava-spewing volcano in the top right corner of the map. While the lava will cause "1 damage per touch", more sedate areas of have also been introduced for players to enjoy, including the nearby Sunny Steps and Lazy Lagoon. "New Season, new Battle Pass. 100 levels, over 100 new rewards," Epic Games announced in the new season's patch notes. "Explore new points of interest that emerged with the Volcano, such as Sunny Steps and Lazy Lagoon."

YouTube has denied that the "Momo challenge" is being hidden inside of popular videos on the site, as concern spreads over the strange rumour. In recent days, substantial concern has been raised about the character of "Momo", and the strange image that is said to represent it. The rumours have led to warnings from police and schools, which have suggested the image is being used by hackers who are attacking children, by attempting to talk to them through WhatsApp and encourage them to commit dangerous acts. But many of the claims and rumours that have reported on are entirely unverified, and there is no reason to believe they are true. The "challenge" has been connected with suicides, for instance, and even supernatural happenings – but all of those reports seem to have sprung up as rumours that have then been reported as authentic by some news sources.

Over the past year, Mozilla worked on expanding its Common Voice initiative to include open source voice recognition datasets in more languages. Now, the organization has released the largest collection of human voices available for use in 18 different languages, including Dutch, Hakha-Chin, Esperanto, Farsi, Basque, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese (Traditional), Welsh and Kabyle. The collection is composed of 1,400 hours of recorded voice clips from 42,000 contributors. Some of them are volunteers who just wanted to help out, while others are linguists and professionals working in voice technologies. Mozilla's Common Voice project aims to make it easier for developers who don't have the resources a bigger company (such as Apple or Google) does to create voice-enabled products.

I was honored when MIT Technology Review invited me to be the first guest curator of its 10 Breakthrough Technologies. Narrowing down the list was difficult. I wanted to choose things that not only will create headlines in 2019 but captured this moment in technological history--which got me thinking about how innovation has evolved over time. My mind went to--of all things--the plow. Plows are an excellent embodiment of the history of innovation. Humans have been using them since 4000 BCE, when Mesopotamian farmers aerated soil with sharpened sticks. We've been slowly tinkering with and improving them ever since, and today's plows are technological marvels.
