Can artificial intelligence solve the mysteries of quantum physics?
Under the direction of Mobileye founder Amnon Shashua, a research group at Hebrew University of Jerusalem's School of Engineering and Computer Science has proven that artificial intelligence (AI) can help us understand the world on an infinitesimally small scale called quantum physics phenomena. Quantum physics phenomena is one of the hottest topics in contemporary physics. It looks at how particles in nature "come together" and bring along their unique properties, such as electrical conductivity or magnetism. However, it has been almost impossible for even the most seasoned researchers to get more than a glimpse of these complex phenomena. This is because of the enormous number of particles these phenomena contain (over one billion billions in each gram) and the enormous number of interactions between them.
Drones retain their buzz at Japanese trade show, with industrial uses expected to bolster growth
CHIBA - With the market for business-use unmanned aircraft looking promising in coming years, a large-scale drone expo that kicked off Wednesday showed more companies are eager to get involved with the trend. Companies ranging from the small to the powerful are showing off their business solutions using drones at Japan Drone, an annual exhibition at Makuhari Messe in Chiba that features more than 200 firms and runs until Friday. Telecom giant KDDI Corp. is showcasing its "smart" drone platform connected to KDDI's mobile communication networks across the country, which allows a drone to navigate a wider swath of territory via remote control. "One merit of using our service is that drones can be remote controlled through our communication networks anywhere in Japan, unlike most drones exhibited at this event, which tap Wi-Fi networks with limited coverage," said So Yamazaki, a KDDI official. KDDI will launch the service to corporate customers in June and lists surveillance, inspection, land survey and analysis as the envisioned applications.

In the century and a bit since its founding in 1889, Nintendo has made playing cards, designed toys, hired out taxis and briefly run love hotels, but it is the last 40 years or so that have made it a cultural icon. Having dabbled in the video games business throughout the 1970s, in the 1980s Nintendo released the Game & Watch and the Nintendo Entertainment System, and since then it has introduced hundreds of millions of people to the joy of video games – from 90s kids squinting at monochrome Game Boys to grandmothers bowling on the Wii. Nintendo's hallmarks are innovation and an unwavering focus on fun. Where other big players in the games industry have chased the latest technology and positioned their consoles as entertainment hubs, Nintendo has mostly come out with affordable, family-friendly machines that combine technical innovations such as the Wii's motion control or the DS's touchscreen with fun, accessible games in the vein of Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Wii Sports. Nintendo hasn't always been at the top of the sales charts, but no other video game creator has proven so enduringly popular across generations. A lot has changed since 1985, but kids still know who Mario is.
Alibaba's new AI can generate 20,000 lines of copy in a second
Step aside humans, your copy writing days are almost done. Chinese tech firm Alibaba has an AI that can generate 20,000 lines of copy (the text you see in an ad) in a second, and has even passed the Turing Test, reports Mumbrella. And it seems that brands, such as Esprit and Texas-based clothing brand Dickies, are already using the tool in China. The Chinese-language tool is reportedly able generate copy that can be "promotional, functional, fun, poetic or heartwarming" with a single button click, and will be used on mainly Alibaba's version of Amazon in China, Tmall and Taobao. There's no word if it's being developed for other languages just yet.
US Army secretary sees A.I. and robotics improving 'survivability and lethality on the battlefield'
The U.S. Army is looking to advance its technology and put its focus on future conflicts, as it presents its colossal budget request to Congress. "This is a big day for the Army," U.S. Army Secretary Mark Esper told CNBC on Tuesday. The bold request allows the Defense Department to prepare for "high-intensity conflict" against countries like Russia and China, he said. "At the same time it also underscores this renaissance that the Army is in with regard to how we man, organize, and train and equip the force," he added. Esper expects the Army to look "much more robotic."

JAL Works with Accenture to Pilot Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Airport Service Introduces voice recognition service to speed up and improve check-in experiences at counters in the Narita and Haneda airports TOKYO; March 12, 2019 – Japan Airlines (JAL) is working with Accenture (NYSE: ACN) on a new service that applies artificial intelligence (AI) to answer passenger requests at the airline's check-in counters. The service assesses what check-in counter agents are saying to passengers and then pushes relevant information to the agents' tablets in near real-time, which includes additional relevant information tailored to the individual's journey. JAL and Accenture are piloting the AI-enhanced service at its international check-in counters at Narita Airport and Haneda Airport starting today. The service uses AI applications including voice recognition to identify and interpret statements made by the agents, so it can retrieve data from JAL's knowledge database or website and proactively answer passenger queries. For passengers, the service is designed to speed up the check-in process and also make the time they spend at the airport less stressful.

Faster Robots Demoralize Co-Workers
It's not whether you win or lose; it's how hard the robot is working. A Cornell-led team has found that when robots are beating humans in contests for cash prizes, people consider themselves less competent and expend slightly less effort--and they tend to dislike the robots. The study, "Monetary-Incentive Competition Between Humans and Robots: Experimental Results," brought together behavioral economists and roboticists to explore how a robot's performance affects humans' behavior and reactions when they're competing against each other simultaneously. The findings validate behavioral economists' theories about loss aversion, which predicts that people won't try as hard when their competitors are doing better, and suggests how workplaces might optimize teams of people and robots working together. "Humans and machines already share many workplaces, sometimes working on similar or even identical tasks," says Guy Hoffman, assistant professor in Cornell's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
