An Effective Algorithm for Learning Single Occurrence Regular Expressions with Interleaving

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The advantages offered by the presence of a schema are numerous. However, many XML documents in practice are not accompanied by a (valid) schema, making schema inference an attractive research problem. The fundamental task in XML schema learning is inferring restricted subclasses of regular expressions. Most previous work either lacks support for interleaving or only has limited support for interleaving. In this paper, we first propose a new subclass Single Occurrence Regular Expressions with Interleaving (SOIRE), which has unrestricted support for interleaving. Then, based on single occurrence automaton and maximum independent set, we propose an algorithm iSOIRE to infer SOIREs. Finally, we further conduct a series of experiments on real datasets to evaluate the effectiveness of our work, comparing with both ongoing learning algorithms in academia and industrial tools in real-world. The results reveal the practicability of SOIRE and the effectiveness of iSOIRE, showing the high preciseness and conciseness of our work.

Promise in the Gloom? How Bleak Future Scenarios for Employment Might Save the Environment

#artificialintelligence

While governments around the world are wrestling with the potential for massive on-rushing technological disruption of work and the jobs market, few are extending the telescope to explore what the knock-on impacts might be for the planet. Here we explore some dimensions of the issue. Although replacing humans with robots has a dystopian flavor, what, if any positives are there from successive waves of artificial intelligence (AI) and other exponentially developing technologies displacing jobs ranging from banker to construction worker? Clearly, the number of people working and the implications for commuting, conduct of their role and their resulting income-related domestic lifestyle all have a direct bearing on their consumption of resources and emissions footprint. However, while everyone wants to know the impact of smart automation, the reality is that we are all clueless as to the outcome over the next twenty years, as this fourth industrial revolution has only just started.

How Disruptive Technologies Are Aiding B2B Ecommerce Growth

#artificialintelligence

Over the last few years, the B2B ecommerce industry has witnessed unprecedented growth. While B2C platforms in India have leveraged technology to a large extent to scale their businesses and improving customer experience, most B2B ecommerce companies tend to undervalue the role technology can play in giving them a sustainable advantage. Let's look at some of the disruptive technologies that will gain momentum in the B2B space in the near future. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to make an impact on all aspects of the business. AI can be leveraged to mimic human interactions and decision making.

Artificial Intelligence Changes Everything in the Security Industry

#artificialintelligence

During my years at Dell, we would share what we serendipitously found in the way of a good read. I thought I'd continue that practice, sending your way, if you haven't already discovered it, Kai-Fu Lee's book AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order. It's a fascinating read โ€“ particularly his insight that, "AI will be to the 21st Century what electricity was to the lastโ€ฆand Data โ€“ the oil that drives the generator." Just as nineteenth-century entrepreneurs applied the electricity break-through to cooking food, lighting rooms and powering industrial equipment, today's AI entrepreneurs are doing the same with the deep learning of artificial narrow intelligence (ANI). Lee's insights were incisive and inspiring โ€“ a clarion call of caution mixed with an articulate voice of hope and encouragement.

Russia Demands Tinder Share User Data, Messages With Its National Intelligence Agencies

TIME - Tech

Russia is requiring dating app Tinder to hand over data on its users -- including messages -- to national intelligence agencies, part of the country's widening crackdown on internet freedoms. The communications regulator said Monday that Tinder was included on a list of online services operating in Russia that are required to provide user data on demand to Russian authorities, including the FSB security agency. Tinder, an app where people looking for dates swipe left or right on the profiles of other users, will have to cooperate with Russian authorities or face being completely blocked in the country. The rule would apply to any user's data that goes through Russian servers, including messages to other people on the app. Tinder was not immediately available for comment.

Driverless trains back on track in Yokohama -- with drivers

The Japan Times

YOKOHAMA - Automated trains in Yokohama resumed services Tuesday -- but with drivers in control -- three days after one of them reversed into a buffer and injured 14 passengers, the line operator said. Yokohama Seaside Line Co. suspended services after the accident at Shin-Sugita Station at around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday. The train traveled the wrong way for about 25 meters and hit the buffer shortly after departing. The company has not determined the cause of the accident at the terminal station on the 11-kilometer line, but indicated there had been a problem with the vehicle's electrical system. Driverless services will resume "after the company investigates the cause of the accident and takes measures to prevent a recurrence," transport minister Keiichi Ishii told reporters.

Japan's Mizuho bank to allow employees to take side jobs by next March

The Japan Times

Mizuho Financial Group Inc. plans to change its personnel policy to allow employees to hold side jobs by the end of next March, the first such move by a mega-bank. By helping employees seek new challenges and opportunities, Mizuho hopes they will use the experience and ideas they acquire outside of the group to create new financial services at Mizuho, President Tatsufumi Sakai said in a recent interview. "I want everyone to refine their skills through a diverse range of challenges so that they can all be specialists in their fields," he said. The 59-year-old chief executive hopes new job opportunities will encourage employees to make use of their experiences in startups, manufacturing companies and other industries to create new business ideas for Mizuho. The initiative is expected to be introduced in the second half of fiscal 2019, after rules on labor and information management are worked out.

Government Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index 2019: How Did Frontier Markets Perform?

#artificialintelligence

The Government Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness Index, compiled by Oxford Insights and the International Development Research Centre, ranks the governments of 194 nations according to how prepared they are to utilise AI in the provision of public services. According to global consulting firm PriceWaterhouseCooper, AI technologies are forecast to add an additional $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with $6.6 trillion to come from an increase in productivity and $9.1 trillion from consumption-side effects. The score that Oxford Insights provides for each country comprises of 11 input metrics grouped under four high-level topics: governance; infrastructure and data; skills and education; and government public services. On a global level, the top ranking countries (and their scores) were: Singapore (9.186), The likes of India (7.515) and China (7.37) were ranked 17th and 20th respectively.

Why It's Time to Prepare for AI Wielding Hackers

#artificialintelligence

Companies have to defend against all attacks, while the attackers only have to get through once. And it's about to get much, much worse. The same artificial intelligence technologies used to power speech recognition, self-driving cars, and "deep fake" videos have the potential to be turned to other uses, like creating viruses that morph faster than antivirus companies can keep up, phishing emails that are indistinguishable from real messages written by humans, and intelligently going after a data center's entire perimeter to find the smallest vulnerability and then use it to burrow in. "We already know that a skilled and determined human attacker is the most difficult to catch," said Ryan Shaw, co-founder at Bionic, a Washington, DC-based cybersecurity startup. "However, much like defenders, our adversaries have a scaling problem -- there is only so much time and skill to go around."
