Bill Gates says he would choose one of these 3 fields if he were starting out today
Congratulations! You've just accomplished something I never managed to do--earn a college degree. Between your commencement speaker and every aunt and uncle at your graduation party, I am sure you are getting a lot of advice. At the risk of piling on, I thought I would share a few thoughts. New college graduates often ask me for career advice. I was lucky to be in my early 20s when the digital revolution was just getting under way, and Paul Allen and I had the chance to help shape it. If I were starting out today and looking for the same kind of opportunity to make a big impact in the world, I would consider three fields.
GPS Multipath Detection in the Frequency Domain

Multipath is among the major sources of errors in precise positioning using GPS and continues to be extensively studied. Two Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based detectors are presented in this paper as GPS multipath detection techniques. The detectors are formulated as binary hypothesis tests under the assumption that the multipath exists for a sufficient time frame that allows its detection based on the quadrature arm of the coherent Early-minus-Late discriminator (Q EmL) for a scalar tracking loop (STL) or on the quadrature (Q EmL) and/or in-phase arm (I EmL) for a vector tracking loop (VTL), using an observation window of N samples. Performance analysis of the suggested detectors is done on multipath signal data acquired from the multipath environment simulator developed by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) as well as on multipath data from real GPS signals. Application of the detection tests to correlator outputs of scalar and vector tracking loops shows that they may be used to exclude multipath contaminated satellites from the navigation solution. These detection techniques can be extended to other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou.
Data Sciences, ISIS and Predictions for 2016
Do you know what is common between San Bernardino's shooting spree and the terrorist attacks in Paris last month? Jillennials, Jihadis who are Millennials. We mine data worldwide, a lot of it, a ton of it, every day and every night, and we do this for a living at PredictifyMe. We have partnership with the United Nations to protect school-goers in Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan and Lebanon using our proprietary software SecureSim and Soothsayer . When the Paris attacks unfolded, we asked ourselves (and our database), how can we use data sciences to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Can we find out what factors influence an otherwise ordinary citizen to become radicalized?
All that is English may be Hindi: Enhancing language identification through automatic ranking of likeliness of word borrowing in social media
Patro, Jasabanta, Samanta, Bidisha, Singh, Saurabh, Basu, Abhipsa, Mukherjee, Prithwish, Choudhury, Monojit, Mukherjee, Animesh
In this paper, we present a set of computational methods to identify the likeliness of a word being borrowed, based on the signals from social media. In terms of Spearman correlation coefficient values, our methods perform more than two times better (nearly 0.62) in predicting the borrowing likeliness compared to the best performing baseline (nearly 0.26) reported in literature. Based on this likeliness estimate we asked annotators to re-annotate the language tags of foreign words in predominantly native contexts. In 88 percent of cases the annotators felt that the foreign language tag should be replaced by native language tag, thus indicating a huge scope for improvement of automatic language identification systems.
Allegis Group Study Outlines Status of HR-Related Artificial Intelligence Initiatives
"We're still in the early stages of understanding how AI will displace old jobs and create new ones. Without question, though, it will have a major impact on how companies compete for talent and get work done," says Andy Hilger, president of Allegis Group. "Innovations in AI will become more and more integral to business success, impacting strategic priorities, technology adoption, and, maybe most important, the overall evolution of the workforce. Our industry, as well as the clients and talent with whom we partner, needs to understand the implications and have a plan to capitalize on what will be a disruptive force." HR Professionals Take Stock of AI When asked to identify areas of talent management that will benefit from AI, top responses from HR professionals surveyed included training talent (26%), screening talent (24%) and workforce planning (22%).
Google to Support AI Startups Through Developers Launchpad Studio
A few weeks after the tech giant admitted that it is already running its own machine learning investment fund, it now announced to the public its hands-on Launchpad Studio program which aims to provide support and resources to hungry AI startups. In the company's Google Developers Blog post on Wednesday, Google claimed that the program's mission is to "enable startups from around the world to build great companies." "In the last 4 years, we've learned a lot while supporting early and late-stage founders. From working with dynamic startups--such as teams applying Artificial Intelligence technology to solving transportation problems in Israel, improving tele-medicine in Brazil, and optimizing online retail in India--we've learned that these startups require specialized services to help them scale," a part of the post read. The Launchpad Studio is another initiative from Google that shows the company's commitment to artificial intelligence and machine learning studies.

Burundi Robotics Team Members Told Parents They Wouldn't Return Home
A clearer picture has emerged of what may have happened to the young members of Burundi's robotics team who vanished last week. The team's six teenage members disappeared after a robotics competition in Washington, D.C. -- but recent reports revealed their parents may have known of their plan not to return home. The principal of Iteletique High School, where two of the students were enrolled, said the teens told their parents of their plans in advance. The parents themselves have not yet made any public statements regarding the disappearances. "Talking with parents, they told us that once the kids arrived there, they told them they may not come back," the principal, Esperance Niyonzima, told VOA's Central Africa news service Thursday.
Ocean-spanning drones could attack the US from Africa
Drones capable of carrying explosives to countries thousands of miles away could be available in just five years, according to an expert. These terror drones could fly from Africa to the US in just over a day, a top US defence adviser told the Pentagon. Many companies are chasing a new commercial market and pushing this technology forward which means in the next few years they could become widely available. The Greased Lightening drone (pictured) can fold eight out of its ten propellers down to reach optimum efficiency. A company called Advanced Aircraft Company has created a drone called Greased Lightening which combines the best bits of drone and aeroplane design.
#DigitalMarketing: AI and machine learning
Platinum Seed recently appointed Ally Behr as design director, as part of its strategy to expand its service offering and leadership team. Behr is responsible for the conceptualisation and execution of digital touch points for clients. She has worked on a multitude of international brands in a variety of environments, from conceptualising through-the-line campaigns, to operating within specialised teams that built complex products. Prior to joining Platinum Seed, Behr was an art director at Ogilvy & Mather, senior creative and user experience designer at Gloo. Artificial intelligence and machine learning is definitely the trend everyone is talking about, even though it been a part of our daily lives for years, from predictive text to chat bots.
