Windows Copilot PCs aren't there yet: 8 must-change upgrades for 2025
It seems like every new laptop lately is a "Windows Copilot PC." With Intel's Lunar Lake and AMD's Ryzen AI 300 CPUs, AI-infused Copilot PCs have finally expanded into traditional x86 laptop territory. They aren't limited to just Arm-powered laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite hardware anymore. Along with speedy neural processing units (NPU) that are capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), Copilot PCs must have at least 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will benefit you even if you don't care about AI.

This Is Where JavaScript Beats Python For Machine Learning. - DLabs.AI
In my previous article, I compared the performance of Python to JavaScript when training a machine learning model. Though JavaScript should have had a computational advantage, it didn't stand a chance against Python. Data processing is Python's strong suit. In contrast, as illustrated by my study, JavaScript can only handle smaller datasets. Truth be told, Python outperforms JavaScript on many fronts when it comes to machine learning, especially in terms of the availability and maturity of ML libraries.

Build AI that works offline with Coral Dev Board, Edge TPU, and TensorFlow Lite
These new devices are made by Coral, Google's new platform for enabling embedded developers to build amazing experiences with local AI. Coral's first products are powered by Google's Edge TPU chip, and are purpose-built to run TensorFlow Lite, TensorFlow's lightweight solution for mobile and embedded devices. As a developer, you can use Coral devices to explore and prototype new applications for on-device machine learning inference. Coral's Dev Board is a single-board Linux computer with a removable System-On-Module (SOM) hosting the Edge TPU. It allows you to prototype applications and then scale to production by including the SOM in your own devices.
3-word addresses: An addressing system built for voice
By dividing the world into 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique 3-word address, what3words enables the most precise reference to any location around the globe. In contrast to GPS coordinates, 3-word addresses are easy to remember and, more importantly, they are designed for explicit and error-free voice input in more than 20 languages. Currently used by various businesses, governments, and individuals, this technology is now integrating with the automotive navigation system included in the all-new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), featured in the new A-Class. At our Nuance Auto Forums in Detroit and Europe, attendees had the opportunity to experience the 3-word address system and to hear the what3word story and vision presented by Gigi Etienne, what3words Partnerships Manager, and Ashley Cashion, Head of Automotive and Mobility at what3words, personally. For those who could not attend, I had the good fortune to talk to these innovators about what3words and their vision on voice input in vehicles. What was the motivation for developing the 3-words address system?

Prisma's arty photo filters now work offline
There's a lot going on behind the curtain with Prisma, the app that turns your banal photos into Lichtenstein- or Van Gogh-esque artworks. The app actually sends your cat photo to its servers where a neural network does the complex transformation. Starting soon, that will no longer be necessary, though. "We have managed to implement neural networks to smartphones, which means users will no longer need an internet connection to turn their photos into art pieces," the company says. Only half of Prisma's styles will be available offline at first (16 total), but others will be added in the "near future."
Unlike Google Translate, Microsoft Translator for iOS now works offline
Microsoft today announced that its Microsoft Translator app for iOS devices can now translate text and images from one language to another even when you're offline. The app already supported this functionality on Android, and the competing Google Translate for Android could work offline, too. But in this case, Microsoft has beat Google to the punch -- Google Translate currently works offline only on Android. "Until now, iPhone users needed an Internet connection if they wanted to translate on their mobile devices. Now, by downloading the Microsoft Translator app and the needed offline language packs, iOS users can get near online-quality translations even when they are not connected to the Internet. This means no expensive roaming charges or not being able to communicate when a data connection is spotty or unavailable," the Microsoft Translator team wrote in a blog post.
