After launching a new version of Wear OS in collaboration with Samsung last I/O, Google is back with more updates. At this year's I/O developer conference, the company unveiled features coming to Android 13 and a new Google Wallet, as well as emergency SOS coming to Wear OS. Google also shared that there are now three times more Wear OS devices this year as there were last year and that new devices from Samsung, Montblanc, Mobvoi and Fossil are coming. Google didn't provide much detail about those devices, though it did later say that more third-party apps were also coming to Wear OS, including SoundCloud and Deezer. Samsung published a blog post sharing that Galaxy Watch 4 owners can soon download the Google Assistant for "faster and more natural voice interactions, enabling quick answers and on-the-go help."

In the two and a half years since Qualcomm unveiled its last smartwatch chip, the landscape has changed quite a bit. Apple has become the far-and-away leader in wearables, Fitbit has launched a full-on smartwatch and app platform, and Google has redesigned and renamed Android Wear to Wear OS. But Qualcomm is hoping to make up for lost time with the new Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, which ushers in a completely new manufacturing process with a chip that's built specifically for watches. With barely a month to go until Google holds its annual Pixel event, it seems as though one of the most anticipated announcements won't be happening. In an interview at IGA on Friday with Miles Barr, director of engineering for Wear OS, former Macworld reporter Caitlin McGarry of Tom's Hardware learned that Google won't be releasing a watch this year, as had been previously rumored. Well, at least we now know how Google was actually able to keep something secret. We'll likely never know whether the project was canceled, delayed, or simply never existed, but the fact of the matter is that we haven't seen any leaked Pixel Watch shots because there weren't any to take. So now there probably won't be any surprises at the event since we've already seen every square inch of the Pixel phones.
