From Language To Vision: A Case Study of Text Animation
Chen, Ping, Alo, Richard, Rundell, Justin
Information can be expressed in multiple formats including natural language, images, and motions. Human intelligence usually faces little difficulty to convert from one format to another format, which often shows a true understanding of encoded information. Moreover, such conversions have broad application in many real-world applications. In this paper, we present a text visualization system that can visualize free text with animations. Our system is illustrated by visualizing example sentences of elementary Physics laws.
Text2Insight: Transform natural language text into insights seamlessly using multi-model architecture
The growing demand for dynamic, user-centric data analysis and visualization is evident across domains like healthcare, finance, and research. Traditional visualization tools often fail to meet individual user needs due to their static and predefined nature. To address this gap, Text2Insight is introduced as an innovative solution that delivers customized data analysis and visualizations based on user-defined natural language requirements. Leveraging a multi-model architecture, Text2Insight transforms user inputs into actionable insights and dynamic visualizations. The methodology begins with analyzing the input dataset to extract structural details such as columns and values. A pre-trained Llama3 model converts the user's natural language query into an SQL query, which is further refined using a Named Entity Recognition (NER) model for accuracy. A chart predictor determines the most suitable visualization type, while the Llama3 model generates insights based on the SQL query's results. The output is a user-friendly and visually informative chart. To enhance analysis capabilities, the system integrates a question-answering model and a predictive model using the BERT framework. These models provide insights into historical data and predict future trends. Performance evaluation of Text2Insight demonstrates its effectiveness, achieving high accuracy (99%), precision (100%), recall (99%), and F1-score (99%), with a BLEU score of 0.5. The question-answering model attained an accuracy of 89% and the predictive model achieved 70% accuracy. These results validate Text2Insight as a robust and viable solution for transforming natural language text into dynamic, user-specific data analysis and visualizations.
CrossVIT-augmented Geospatial-Intelligence Visualization System for Tracking Economic Development Dynamics
Bai, Yanbing, Su, Jinhua, Qiao, Bin, Ma, Xiaoran
Timely and accurate economic data is crucial for effective policymaking. Current challenges in data timeliness and spatial resolution can be addressed with advancements in multimodal sensing and distributed computing. We introduce Senseconomic, a scalable system for tracking economic dynamics via multimodal imagery and deep learning. Built on the Transformer framework, it integrates remote sensing and street view images using cross-attention, with nighttime light data as weak supervision. The system achieved an R-squared value of 0.8363 in county-level economic predictions and halved processing time to 23 minutes using distributed computing. Its user-friendly design includes a Vue3-based front end with Baidu maps for visualization and a Python-based back end automating tasks like image downloads and preprocessing. Senseconomic empowers policymakers and researchers with efficient tools for resource allocation and economic planning.
EL-VIT: Probing Vision Transformer with Interactive Visualization
Zhou, Hong, Zhang, Rui, Lai, Peifeng, Guo, Chaoran, Wang, Yong, Sun, Zhida, Li, Junjie
Nowadays, Vision Transformer (ViT) is widely utilized in various computer vision tasks, owing to its unique self-attention mechanism. However, the model architecture of ViT is complex and often challenging to comprehend, leading to a steep learning curve. ViT developers and users frequently encounter difficulties in interpreting its inner workings. Therefore, a visualization system is needed to assist ViT users in understanding its functionality. This paper introduces EL-VIT, an interactive visual analytics system designed to probe the Vision Transformer and facilitate a better understanding of its operations. The system consists of four layers of visualization views. The first three layers include model overview, knowledge background graph, and model detail view. These three layers elucidate the operation process of ViT from three perspectives: the overall model architecture, detailed explanation, and mathematical operations, enabling users to understand the underlying principles and the transition process between layers. The fourth interpretation view helps ViT users and experts gain a deeper understanding by calculating the cosine similarity between patches. Our two usage scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of EL-VIT in helping ViT users understand the working mechanism of ViT.
BEKG: A Built Environment Knowledge Graph

Practices in the built environment have become more digitalized with the rapid development of modern design and construction technologies. However, the requirement of practitioners or scholars to gather complicated professional knowledge in the built environment has not been satisfied yet. In this paper, more than 80,000 paper abstracts in the built environment field were obtained to build a knowledge graph, a knowledge base storing entities and their connective relations in a graph-structured data model. To ensure the retrieval accuracy of the entities and relations in the knowledge graph, two well-annotated datasets have been created, containing 2,000 instances and 1,450 instances each in 29 relations for the named entity recognition task and relation extraction task respectively. These two tasks were solved by two BERT-based models trained on the proposed dataset. Both models attained an accuracy above 85% on these two tasks. More than 200,000 high-quality relations and entities were obtained using these models to extract all abstract data. Finally, this knowledge graph is presented as a self-developed visualization system to reveal relations between various entities in the domain.
TensorWatch: A debugging and visualization system for machine learning
The rise of deep learning is accompanied by ever-increasing model complexity, larger datasets, and longer training times for models. When working on novel concepts, researchers often need to understand why training metrics are trending the way they are. So far, the available tools for machine learning training have focused on a "what you see is what you log" approach. As logging is relatively expensive, researchers and engineers tend to avoid it and rely on a few signals to guesstimate the cause of the patterns they see. At Microsoft Research, we've been asking important questions surrounding this very challenge: What if we could dramatically reduce the cost of getting more information about the state of the system?
