Artificial General Intelligence, the AI with human-like capabilities, could be decades away, said Capps. With the release of ChatGPT last year, a renewed focus was placed on AGI – artificial general intelligence – the advanced technology with similar capabilities to that of humans. And while some argue GPT-4, the latest version of the technology, appears close to AGI, others say it is years, or decades, before the technology reaches human-like abilities. There is no one agreed upon definition of AGI, but a 2020 report from consulting giant McKinsey said a true AGI would need to master skills like sensory perception, fine motor skills, and natural language understanding. Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence have led to renewed focus on AGI, the technology with capabilities similar to that of humans.

AGI solutions are being continuously investigated, though the current most promising mainstream technology, neural networks, while contributing to some extraordinary results, are still running short of achieving them. This criticism is not new, and, most recently Gary Marcus, in "Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal", arXiv:1801.00631v1, has outlined many issues with current deep learning architectures, in particular their inability to'understand' the information they manipulate and their ability to mostly work in a'stable' world. As Marcus states in his article: 'The logic of deep learning is such that it is likely to work best in highly stable worlds, like the board game Go, which has unvarying rules, and less well in systems such as politics and economics that are constantly changing. To the extent that deep learning is applied in tasks such as stock prediction, there is a good chance that it will eventually face the fate of Google Flu Trends, which initially did a great job of predicting epidemological [sic] data on search trends, only to complete [sic] miss things like the peak of the 2013 flu season (Lazer, Kennedy, King & Vespignani, 2014)'. Even one of the so called'fathers' of Deep Learning architectures, Geoffrey Hinton, has recently voiced his concerns that deep learning needs to start over.

AGI or'Strong AI' is the concept of a machine with general intelligence that mimics human intelligence and/or behaviors, with the ability to learn and apply its intelligence to solve any problem. The field of artificial intelligence has spawned a vast range of subset fields and terms: machine learning, neural networks, deep learning and cognitive computing, to name but a few. However here we will turn our attention to the specific term'artificial general intelligence', thanks to the Portland-based AI company Kimera Systems' (momentous) claim to have launched the world's first ever example, called Nigel. The AGI Society defines artificial general intelligence as "an emerging field aiming at the building of "thinking machines"; that is general-purpose systems with intelligence comparable to that of the human mind (and perhaps ultimately well beyond human general intelligence)". AGI would, in theory, be able to perform any intellectual feat a human can. You can now perhaps see why a claim to have launched the world's first ever AGI might be a tad ambitious, to say the least.
