As you're walking along the street, China's newest surveillance technology could soon be watching you – from space. Scientists in Beijing have created'the world's most powerful spy camera' which can pick out facial details from distances exceeding 63 miles (100km). It means the spy camera could potentially be in space aboard a floating satellite while clearly seeing faces of people on Earth's surface. It could also take high-resolution images of foreign military satellites operated by other nations that are also orbiting Earth, the South China Morning Post reported. The technology, detailed by the scientists in a new paper, could be launched aboard a satellite in the near future.

Before the International Space Station was launched into orbit in 1998, the U.S. signed a document with several other countries to agree to the peaceful use of the orbital laboratory. The agreement included Russia, Japan, Canada and 11 European countries. China was left out of the plan. Nearly a decade later, China expressed interest in joining those on board the space station.

The Shenzhou-17 crew members on board China's orbiting Tiangong space station completed their first extravehicular activities, or spacewalk, at 21:35 on Thursday, according to the China Manned Space Agency. Three Chinese astronauts Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie, and Jiang Xinlin collaborated to pull off all planned tasks with the assistance of the space station's robotic arm and scientific staff on the ground. After their spacewalk which lasted about seven and a half hours, Tang Hongbo and Tang Shengjie returned to the Wentian lab module safely.

Crew members aboard China's orbiting space station completed their first spacewalk as part of their six-month mission. The seven-hour extra-vehicular activity was completed at 12:16 a.m. Fei Junlong and Zhang Lu, who are members of the Shenzhou-15 mission, completed several tasks like installing extension pumps outside the Mengtian laboratory module during the spacewalk while fellow crew member Deng Qingming supported them from inside the Tiangong space station, according to AP News. Fei and Zhang safely returned to the Wentian lab module following the extravehicular activity, according to China.org.cn. The three crew members are expected to make several such spacewalks while aboard the Tiangong station, which is the second permanently inhabited space outpost after Nasa's International Space Station.

China launched its Tiangong space station in 2021 - its first long-term space station project - with the final modules set to launch later this year. The country's announcement also comes as China continues to produce new billionaires at a blistering pace - much faster than any other nation on Earth. While there were no specific details included to determine what the future of space tourism in China will look like, officials have said it is likely that people without formal astronaut training could be launched into orbit'relatively soon.' Yang Liwei, who became the first Chinese astronaut back in 2003, said tourists visiting Tiangong'is not a matter of technology but of demand.' China is also thought to be working on a more tourist-friendly reusable spacecraft that could take up to seven astronauts at a time into space.


On China's new space station, a robotic arm test paves way for future construction

A large robotic arm on China's space station has successfully grasped and maneuvered a cargo spacecraft in a crucial test ahead of upcoming module launches. The 33-foot-long (10 meters) robotic arm on the Tianhe module of China's new Tiangong space station took hold of the Tianzhou 2 supply ship and moved it around 20 degrees, before returning it to the forward port on Tianhe's docking hub. The 47-minute operation began at 5:12 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 5 (2212 UTC, 6:12 am Beijing time Jan. 6) to test the procedures and equipment needed for the addition and movement of larger space station modules. The successful trial was vital to the China National Space Administration's plan to complete construction of its space station later this year. China's next space station modules, named Mengtian and Wentian, are scheduled to launch on separate Long March 5B rockets in the coming months and dock with the orbiting Tianhe. The robotic arm will then need to grasp the modules, each with a mass of more than 44,100 pounds (20,000 kilograms), and maneuver them from the forward port to radial ports.
