Phantom Of The Operator: Self-Driving Tech's Slowing Timetable Creates Opening For This Monitoring And Guidance Startup

#artificialintelligence

A remote Phantom Auto operator monitors a Postmates delivery robot. The 2020s may yet be the decade of self-driving cars, but early predictions from automakers and tech developers including Tesla, Nissan, Nvidia and Ford that autonomous vehicles would be ready as soon as this year or next don't seem to be panning out. This week auto supply giant Magna ended a tech alliance with Lyft on self-driving robo-taxis owing to a slower-than-anticipated timetable. But the billions of dollars that have been poured into R&D and development of advanced sensors and computing the past few years are being leveraged for near-term applications, including delivery robots and self-driving trucks, as well as autonomous warehouse, cleaning and security bots. And as those vehicles proliferate, there's an increasing need to keep track of them, monitor their operations, provide remote guidance in some cases or even, in very limited circumstances, drive them remotely.

Geneva to test fleet of self-driving buses

#artificialintelligence

According to a press statement [insert link] published by the university, the four-year project will draw on a fleet of autonomous vehicles of sizes ranging from four to 12 places, and aims gather data reflecting the economic, logistic, and social implications of a self-driving network. Run in collaboration with local authorities and the Geneva public transport services (TPG), the trial hopes to collect information around three major axes: "autonomous driving" (the security and adaptability of vehicles), "optimization of itineraries" (the user experience), and "in- and out-of-vehicle services" (catering to reduced mobility passengers, for example). It will be conducted in suburban areas less frequently or conveniently serviced by existing routes. "Autonomous vehicles will not go downtown," said Denis Berdoz, CEO of TPG. Geneva, Switzerland's second-largest city, is particularly suited to such a trial because of the complex traffic situations it offers (a combination of jams, pedestrianized zones and bicycle lanes), as well as the well-mapped and GPS-ready nature of the region. The project has a budget of some €22 million (CHF26.28 million), €16 million of which are funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research financing mechanism. Here's what we know: According to the Tempe Police Department, the car was in self-driving mode around 10 p.m. Sunday night. There was a human safety driver in the car as a contingency, but it's unclear at this point if they tried to intervene before the accident.

Ford and Miami to form test bed for self-driving cars

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Ford Motor Co. is making Miami-Dade County its new test bed for self-driving vehicles. The automaker and its partners - Domino's Pizza, ride-hailing company Lyft and delivery company Postmates - are starting pilot programs to see how consumers react to autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles. Self-driving startup and Ford partner Argo AI already has a fleet of cars in the area making the highly detailed maps that are necessary for self-driving. Ford also will establish its first-ever autonomous vehicle terminal in Miami, where it will learn how to service and deploy its test fleet. Apple added two dozen self-driving SUVs to its California test fleet

Engadget

Last April, Apple was granted a permit to test its autonomous vehicle technology by the state of California and since then, the company has expanded its test fleet from three vehicles to 27, Bloomberg reports. The California Department of Motor Vehicles said that Apple had registered 24 Lexus RX450h SUVs between last July and this month. While initially aiming to develop its own autonomous vehicle, Apple later decided to switch gears and design a self-driving system that could be incorporated into other vehicles. And we've seen glimpses of that technology in recent months. A patent application, a presentation from Apple AI Research Director Ruslan Salakhutdinov and a research paper have all pulled back parts of the curtain Apple's technology development usually hides behind.

Watch Tesla's latest self-driving demo in real-time instead of sped up for better look at the system

#artificialintelligence

Yesterday, Tesla released two very interesting videos of the latest version of its self-driving technology on the new Autopilot 2.0 hardware. While they are fascinating to watch, they were both sped up. I think it's worth revisiting the test with the video slowed down to real-time in order to really appreciate the level of autonomy Tesla achieved so far. The first thing you will notice with the video below at approximate real-time speed is that the system hesitates on a few occasions. It certainly doesn't look like an experienced comfortable driver, but it does look like a capable licensed driver, which is an accomplishment on its own.

Self-driving cars: Hollywood wants to entertain you while the car drives itself

If the entertainment industry has its way, you'll be watching its latest movies and TV on a big screen inside your self-driving car. Maybe you'll engage augmented reality or play video games. Hollywood is starting to take a serious look at what could be a huge opportunity in a new age of self-driving cars: Seizing a big chunk of the time that people used to spend behind the steering wheel to get them to focus on entertainment.

Intel plans a test fleet of 100 self-driving cars

Engadget

Intel isn't wasting any time now that it officially owns Mobileye. The Mobileye team has unveiled plans to build a fleet of 100 or more self-driving vehicles to conduct tests in both its native Israel as well as the US and Europe. They'll meld Mobileye's sensor, mapping and driving technology with Intel's computing platforms, data center tech and 5G wireless to make Level 4 autonomous cars (they can do all the driving themselves but may ask for intervention) that talk to the cloud. They won't be tied to any one brand -- sorry, BMW. As Intel explains, it's as much about selling the concept as actual experimentation.

GM boosts output of self-driving Bolts, test fleet

The Japan Times

DETROIT – General Motors Co. says it has built 130 self-driving Chevrolet Bolt electric cars at a factory in suburban Detroit, making it among the first automakers to mass produce self-driving vehicles. The automaker has been building self-driving Bolts at its Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township, Michigan, since January. Unlike GM's earlier self-driving test vehicles, the new cars were built on the same assembly line as regular Bolts that are being sold to customers. Once they rolled off the line, the self-driving Bolts went to another area of the plant to get their hardware installed. The Bolt is a fully electric car that went on sale late last year.
