Tesla's Autopilot: Ethics and Tragedy

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This case study delves into the ethical ramifications of an incident involving Tesla's Autopilot, emphasizing Tesla Motors' moral responsibility. Using a seven-step ethical decision-making process, it examines user behavior, system constraints, and regulatory implications. This incident prompts a broader evaluation of ethical challenges in the automotive industry's adoption of autonomous technologies, urging a reconsideration of industry norms and legal frameworks. The analysis offers a succinct exploration of ethical considerations in evolving technological landscapes.

How Tesla Uses PyTorch

#artificialintelligence

Last week, Tesla Motors made the news for delivering big with its smart summon feature on their cars. The cars can now be made to move around the parking lot with just a click. A myriad of tools and frameworks run in the background which makes Tesla's futuristic features a great success. One such framework is PyTorch. PyTorch has gained popularity over the past couple of years and it is now powering the fully autonomous objectives of Tesla motors.

UPS orders 125 Tesla big-rig trucks that look as if they were designed for Batman

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Tesla just announced it's newest, largest supercharger stations in the US. LOUISVILLE -- UPS Inc. is making a big investment in all-electric big rigs by placing an order for 125 of the sleek new semi trucks from Tesla. Published reports put the cost of the trucks at between $150,000 and $200,000 each and that the UPS order is the largest to date for a vehicle unveiled in November. That could set the package and freight delivery company with its main air hub in Louisville back as much as $25 million. Tesla expects to begin producing the vehicles in 2019.

Tesla eyes hurricane-ravaged Caribbean, could shape power grids

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Tesla is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in "platoons" that automatically follow a lead vehicle, and is getting closer to testing a prototype. Love exists, but they are not together. Reports swirled over the weekend that the entrepreneur, Elon Musk, and Amber called it quits, after publicizing their couple status in April. TheStreet's Action Alerts PLUS Portfolio Manager Jim Cramer looks at Thursday's trending stocks. Tesla had roughly 63,000 people cancel their order for the companies Model 3 car in the last year. Tesla's greatly anticipated Model 3 will finally start rolling out of the manufacturing plant. CEO, Elon Musk took to Twitter to make the announcement.

Tesla CEO: Basic Income 'Will Be Necessary'

#artificialintelligence

A universal basic income will become necessary because of all the jobs that will be lost to automation in the coming years, says the founder and CEO of Tesla Motors. "There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better," billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk told a crowd on Monday at the World Government Summit in Dubai. "These are not things I wish will happen; these are things I think probably will happen." Elon Musk, Chairman of SolarCity and CEO of Tesla Motors, speaks at SolarCity's Inside Energy Summit in Manhattan, New York October 2, 2015. The man behind the Tesla electric car, the SpaceX private space flight program and solar power company SolarCity then brought up the question of what to do about a future with fewer jobs.

Artificial intelligence research must turn focus to safety, Hawking, Musk and others say

Artificial intelligence researchers should focus on ensuring AI systems "do what we want them to do," rather than just advancing and improving the capabilities of the technology, researchers and experts say. An open letter from the Future of Life Institute this week called for expanded research to ensure AI systems are "robust" and benefit society. Works of science fiction like the film Terminator Genisys have long portrayed artificial intelligence taking over the world and destroying humankind. The open letter says it's time to focus research on making AI safe and beneficial to humans. It says: "Our AI systems must do what we want them to do." Max Tegmark, co-founder of the institute, said in an email that the letter is mainly directed at the AI research community and anyone who funds it. It has been signed by hundreds of researchers and other AI experts, along with physicist Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, who have both spoken publicly about the risks of AI.

1 Company Is Already Winning AI -- The Motley Fool

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) is primarily known as the company that revolutionized computer gaming. The debut of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999 provided gamers with faster, clearer, and more lifelike images. The GPU was designed to quickly perform complex mathematical calculations that were necessary to accelerate the creation of realistic graphics. It achieved this feat by performing many functions at the same time, known as parallel computing. This resulted in faster, smoother motion in game graphics and a revolution in modern gaming.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) Model S P100D Easter Egg Update Will Make Self-Driving Car Even Faster

International Business Times

Two weeks ago, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk teased on Twitter an upcoming "P100D Ludicrous Easter egg" update that would unlock the full performance of the Model S. And on Wednesday, he announced exactly what that Easter egg is. When the P100D was announced in August, it already broke records, not just for electric vehicles but for car speeds in general. It could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles an hour in 2.5 seconds, making it the fastest car in the world (excluding supercars). This update shaves an extra 0.1 second off that time.

It's Official. Tesla Uses NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 AI Computing Platform

#artificialintelligence

Heart of the Tesla's new autonomous driving hardware, that some day will enable fully self-driving cars, is the latest NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 AI computing platform (see live presentation of it in action below). NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 is the open AI car computing platform that enables automakers and their tier 1 suppliers to accelerate production of automated and autonomous vehicles. For NVIDIA, DRIVE PX 2 is now in full production as Tesla requires thousands of units each month for manufacturing of the Model S and Model X, soon that number could be tens of thousands per month when the Model 3 assembly starts later next year. Tesla Motors has announced that all Tesla vehicles -- Model S, Model X, and the upcoming Model 3 -- will now be equipped with an on-board "supercomputer" that can provide full self-driving capability. The computer delivers more than 40 times the processing power of the previous system. It runs a Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar, and radar processing.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) Hardware Update: Full Autonomous-Driving Video, Summon Feature

International Business Times

It is way past 1 a.m. Thursday morning on the West Coast but that means nothing to Tesla Motors' owner Elon Musk who just released additional details of the latest updates to the company's autonomous vehicles. Musk also said that retrofitting existing Tesla cars with full self-driving hardware is both difficult and expensive, making it cheaper and simpler to buy a new vehicle instead. Another cool feature is the new "Summon" button available on the Tesla smartphone app. In a move reminiscent of the Batmobile, tapping that button will literally send a signal to the car, which will drive itself to wherever you (and your phone) are.
